  • The Snake, the Crocodile, and the Dog: The Amelia Peabody Series, Book 7

This adventure transports Amelia Peabody and her husband Emerson to Amarna, the rustic desert site where the two archaeologists first met, beginning the 13-year association that would take them from mayhem to murder in the Egyptian outback.

Molly says: "Great Series, Greatest Narrator"
    "A pleasant surprise"
    Overall

I was worried about this seventh book in the Amelia Peabody series; having listened to the books in order of their publication, I wasn't sure of my reaction to a different reader (Susan O'Malley did an excellent job on the first six books). It took me less than one hour to get used to the narrator for this book, Barbara Rosenblat, who does such a great job that I intend to listen to it again! You always know what Peabody is really thinking, no matter what she says; Emerson's meaningful growls and Ramses' angelic voice had me laughing out loud: it was that delightful! I can't wait to get the next one!

Captain John "Black Jack" Geary's legendary exploits are known to every schoolchild. Revered for his heroic "last stand" in the early days of the war, he was presumed dead. But a century later, Geary miraculously returns from survival hibernation and reluctantly takes command of the Alliance fleet as it faces annihilation by the Syndics.

Appalled by the hero-worship around him, Geary is nevertheless a man who will do his duty. And he knows that bringing the stolen Syndic hypernet key safely home is the Alliance's one chance to win the war. But to do that, Geary will have to live up to the impossibly heroic "Black Jack" legend.

Where does The Lost Fleet: Dauntless rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

The Lost Fleet: Dauntless is among the best sci-fi stories I ever read/listen to; Jack Campbell’s storytelling is insightful, funny, and well paced, in the style of Mike Shepherd’s Kris Longknife and, to a lesser degree, Lois McMaster Bujold’s Vorkosigan and Orson Scott Card’ Ender series.

What does Christian Rummel and Jack Campbell bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Rummel is simply fantastic; he creates believable female voices (and male ones, of course) with each its own characteristics; you always know who’s talking!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

A bit too long to listen to all of it in one sitting, but I found myself going out of my way to do things that would let me listen to my iPod...

    Any additional comments?

Half way through listening to this first book, I bought the rest of the series and do not regret it one bit. That’s how good it is.

It's a harmless pastime - until the night she finds a member killed in a manner that eerily resembles the crime the club was about to discuss.

As usual, once started, it was difficult to put down the earbuds... I was a bit worried about the change of reader as James Marsters has given a close-to-perfect performance of books 1 to 12, but John Glover has followed with his own near-perfect reading of book #13! Great writing, great reading, great listening! I hope there will be a book 14 next year?

Richard K. Morgan has received widespread praise for his astounding 25th-century novels featuring Takeshi Kovacs, and has established a growing legion of fans. Mixing classic noir sensibilities with a searing futuristic vision of an age when death is nearly meaningless, Morgan returns to his saga of betrayal, mystery, and revenge, as Takeshi Kovacs, in one fatal moment, joins forces with a mysterious woman who may have the power to shatter Harlan's World forever.

    "Triple wow!"
    Overall

The Takeshi Kovacs trilogy is scifi at its best. Extremely original, you can never predict what comes next; the stories are tight and the characters always interesting. Very addictive and entertaining.
