I have read or listened to all of Charles Todd's books and I especially like the character of plucky WWI nurse Bess Crawford. The reader put me right in the front lines of caring for the wounded.
I douldn't put it down and wore my MP3 player all day till I finished it! Charles Todd always has lots of plot twists and turns which are not predictable. One minute Bess is fighting for her life with the Spanish influenza the next, she is nearly killed at the front.
Thank goodness it wasn't a 3 parter. I had to know what happened next and despite having read or listened to all of Todd's books, I couldn't guess what was going to happen next.
For fans of period murder mysteries and strong female characters, I highly recomment it
Yes because I didn't know who was causing the mishaps aimed at Maisie's life or why as there were no hints till later on in the book and she had 3 mysteries to solve. She also had to confront the ghosts of he own past during the war which she had never really done.Four plotlines keeps the listener busy keepimng everything straight. We're not all as brilliant as Maisie.
She did a great job with all the different voices which makes it more realistic. That is why I listen to so many books! If the reader is great, you can't top the experience! She is excellent.
I wanted to cry because of the losses of love caused by the war. But there was joy too whenMaisie was able to bring closure to her friend, but also frustration with a man who was so rigid, he didn't really want Maisie'shelp.
Maisie is so good at helping others in her work but she has neglected her own coming to terms with the Great War.Winspear ,like Chales Todd, uses the reverberations of that conflict in her plotting . The listener knows there is another great conflict in the futures of many of characters which makes it even more poinant. But the resiliance of many to carry on with their lives and try to find happiness such as Billy is satisfying.
Although not as complicated a plot as many books I listen to, it is a funny quick listen.Georgie is a hoot and falls from one pickle into another, some she exticates herself from and some she needs help with The reader Katherine Kellgrin is very good and handles all the differenct characters and accents well.If I were reading it, I would have skimmed through it quickly but for me, the reader made it a better experience worth the time..
Georgie on her knees in a maid's uniform sweeping out a fireplace, trying not to be recognized. Everywhere she goes, she is in danger of being recognized.
I almost did. I couldn't sleep but didn't want to get up so I spent much of the night plugged in with Georgie and her world.
I will definately listen to the other books in the series as a change of pace from heavier listens
