I've been forgetting to write up this review for like almost 2 weeks now. I completed this wonderful novel probably March 1st. Like all my other reviews on the Lost Fleet series I don't want to sound bias or anything, but this is truly a 10/10 read(listen). The reader, Christian Rummel, is perfect he gives voice and life to the characters with his change of pitch to sound like a female to a male and back. I don't think I can hear another voice read this book to me ever... never ever.
So about the book then... With out spoiling anything I will say this: You will be on the edge of your seat through out the whole book. I've been on edge when ever I read this series since the first novel. It's just that great! Theres action and... well slightly romance. The way Jack Campbell brings these characters to life is plain astonishing. I hope you all enjoy this book as much as I do :)
When I pick up a audio book I don't read the reviews before I read the book. I don't want to be influenced by other peoples judgments before I get a chance to see it for my self and make my own opinions. So After I finished the book a little while ago I thought I had already made a review... I didn't so here it is:
A lot of people didn't like the narrator, but liked the story. I have to agree the narrator wasn't what I had expected as a voice however he grew on me. Just like in many of the other series novels I listen to once you get used to one voice you can't imagine another. I hope to hear this narrator again in the next book that I've already bought.
The downside to the narrator is that he does sound a little childish. Not in the way he speaks but how he speaks. He has a young voice which is alright. At first I didn't like it like so many others, but as I said he grew on me. His voice was the voice of the main character, Percy Jackson, and I could not even fathom another voice being his. Jesse Bermstein made Percy Jackson come to life with his voice alone. Given the characters nature and as another reviewer had said... I think Jesse's voice completed the character which I'm assuming is why he is also the narrator of the novel.
So then review the story time; The story was a 10/10 hands down. I've always loved the Olympian gods and the mythology of the era I even thought about writing my own story modernizing or bringing the gods into our life... To bad Rick Riordan beat me to it :) It's ok though my story would have sucked in comparison as I'm a sci-fi writer.
Everything about this novel is excellent the reason I picked it up is because I saw the movie and I was amazed and dazzled. So I came for the book and I shouldn't have been awed at how much better it was, but I was. The Lightning Thief is a good read so much detail and research thrown into this book's background. I learned things about the mythology of the gods I probably had forgotten so many years ago. The characters sounded like their ancient stories. Perfect capture of everything. Story, characters, and presence. I don't know how to explain that part really, but all I can say is you should read it for your self. Once you get past chapter 1 you'll get passed the voice because thats when things start getting good.
I'm still finishing the second half of the novel now I "read" maybe a chapter a day some times two depending on whats going on. I was hooked in the first 30 minutes of the book. The reader is excellent portraying the story deep and tantalizingly. I LOVED the first chapter and I LOVED the second chapter I was amazed at how great it turned out to be. I'm a sci-fi reader by nature, but after listening to Starship Troopers bought from Audible I didn't think it was possible to get me so worked up over another piece of work--that I've never heard of until I started searching Audible--so soon after JUST finishing one of the greatest sci-fi novels ever written, Starship Troopers. I gave 5 stars in all areas for this novel even though I've yet to finish it because I already know it will end either with the perfect cliff hanger or a great ending... Either way I'm going to purchase the remainder of the series and enjoy every second of the story as I "read" it! I wish I could send Jack Campbell himself a letter of some sort praising his writing skills in this novel he is a excellent writer.
Funny, but not really interesting... It made no sense to me what so ever however I could relate it to my life... Sadly :/
But like some other people you either need to find better choices for "first listens" or remove the feature I pretty much dont want it associated with my account it wasn't really something to be promoted about.
personally I think you should extend the time and for more genres... Like the first 10 minutes of a story in 1 of each major category; Sci-fi, Fantasy, Romance, Drama, etc.
