"Exceptional Noir Thriller!"
The story starts out as any typical thriller.... dead and/or missing person; suspect is person closest to them, etc, however it wasn't written as formulaic, as say a Micheal Connelly or James Patterson, et al. Others reviewers have given you a good idea of the plot, so I'll just add Flynn has an almost vortex style of writing, which starts in a slow character development spiral and just spins and builds momentum until it reaches full speed.... sucking you in and leaving you to hang on tight!
I thought Flynn was spot on with the characters. One of the negative reviewers mentioned they thought the characters were far fetched and they knew no one like them. Thank God they don't, because I have known two sociopaths first hand and you do not want to be anywhere near them, if you don't have to. Flynn nailed that personality type, as well as those who have been unfortunate enough to come across their path.
This is definitely thriller noir and not your typical police thriller, so be prepared for a more psychological, head trip read... broken characters and all...
Worth the credit!
"OK, I'm Hooked!!!!"
This was my very first "Hypnosis" audio (or anything Hypnosis related, for that matter) and it was amazing!!!! I'm fortunate to have a dedicated spa area in my home, with a massage table, etc, so was able to completely shut down and relax. I have never been hypnotized before, so wasn't sure what to expect. I wasn't asleep nor awake, just zoned out.
Erick Brown has a great, soothing voice and was the perfect narrator.
I'm not sure about the weight loss, etc, as this was my first session, but I "awoke" feeling totally energized and calm. I don't have a lot of weight to lose, just the normal 10 pounds, or so, but I think just taking a moment for myself, out of the hectic schedule to meditate like this will be a big help in losing the extra weight!
I'm hooked and have just bought another of his audios:)
Enjoy!
PS. Another review wrote a negative review and I thought I should clear up the confusion. She mentions this is an "Anxiety" session. It is not... possibly she did not listen long enough. It goes through a relaxation/anxiety reducing stage, which is the hypnosis stage, THEN, he introduces the weight loss encouragements. At that point, you should be "under" and receptive to suggestions. Personally, I was excited about going through that stage, as I have much stress in my life (who doesn't these days LOL) and welcomed that portion of the audio:)
"Solid 4 out of 5 stars..."
Just a quick review, as others have said most of what needs to be said. Overall, an enjoyable read, just not as full as other Prey novels.
Lacked in character development. Sandford relied on past novel character development, so if you have not read others in the Prey series, you will not get the full experience and inside jokes, etc.
Plot did not contain much mystery, as story played out as expected.
Still, I have read all other Prey and enjoyed this story, so give it a solid 4 out of 5.
"Cliché Characters... Overall a Decent Beach Listen"
Predictable, brainless, beach listen... Characters are VERY cliché. Typical Jackie Collins money, power, fame, sex read. Has a definite 80's vibe, ala Dynasty or Dallas.
If you are looking for something to listen to while doing chores or multi-tasking, this will do nicely... That's why I bought it. Very well narrated, overall. Jackie Collins has a bit of a lisp, which I found a bit annoying, however not enough to take away from the story. All other actors did a fantastic job, especially considering reading so many characters.
JC left an opening for a sequel, but did wrap up this story to my satisfaction, so I wasn't left waiting.
A solid 3 stars...4 stars if rated solely as a beach read.
"A Most Insidiously Dark Tale..."
If you are looking for the "Feel Good Book Of The Year", this is not it! A most insidiously dark tale of an extremely dysfunctional family. I understand this is Gillian Flynn's first novel and it shows... not in her writing style, which is excellent, but in the storyline balance.
I liked the story, overall, however It stays dark and miserable throughout. Not a moment of lightness or joy. I was left feeling a bit empty. Maybe that was the author's intention... hmmm... However, I think she could have thrown in a bit of a happy moment, just to even out the ride.
Like when you see a photo of a fire ravaged forest, blackened and bleak, but then notice one small, green blade of grass or a single yellow flower popping up through the soot covered dirt. Just a little happy moment...
That said, it was well written, with depth to the characters and storyline, until the ending, where she seemed to rush, just to wrap things up. It felt as though this was an abridged version toward the end. Maybe it was done in the editing dept and not the author's choice.
I would read "Gone Girl", which was superb, highly recommended, and a more polished representation of this fine author's true talents.
The narrator did a fabulous job and I have enjoyed her work reading Lisa Gardner novels, as well.
"Reachers "Sex Therapy" seems to have kicked in:)"
Reacher's back and so is Lee Childs! He seemed to have phoned in his last works, however has redeemed himself with this. Fast paced. Edgy. Witty banter. Quality from start to finish. A read you will want to listened to straight through. .... still can't visualize Tom Cruise playing Reacher on film... it's hoped that deal has faded away.... But I digress... fun Reacher story. Enjoy!
"HOLY CRIMONY! This Was So Disturbingly Good!!!!!!"
I literally just finished this...Seriously, what an intense story!! I had no idea what this story was about when I purchased it. I hadn't heard any of the "Hype", so went in with a free head. I'm kinda speechless, to be honest with you... Very well written and well read. An emotionally draining read, so be prepared, however spot on with the subject matter. I don't know anything about the author, but I do hope she wasn't drawing from first hand experiences!
The story is told by the "Victim"...leaping between past and present, finally converging to a dramatic ending and complete resolution.
I am usually not into this type of "Lifetime for Woman Channel" subject matter, however this was so well done and "real"...
One thought I had, while reading this, was I wonder what Male Readers think of this story and what emotions it brings out in them. I imagine it would be a whole different read for men, then woman.
I look forward to reading reviews from a man's perspective.
"Left a Lot on the Table..."
Daniel Suarez raised the bar so high with the Daemon/Freedom TM story, it's difficult to not hold this story up to those standards... This story was not as "Full". On it's on merits, Kill Decision doesn't disappoint... Action; Intrigue; Kissing; Pheromone spraying mutant Drones... Had me captivated 90% of the way through, however, like Daemon, the ending wasn't complete and left it open for a sequel. I don't mind, as it is a fun read and I will purchase the next, it's just that I wish more writers would give us the complete story like the old school writers, Irving Wallace, Tom Clancy, et al, did. Audibles from those guys were complete and often 24 or more hours long with a complete ending/no sequel.... giving we readers that which we paid.
That said, Daniel Suarez is a very talented writer and I hope he stays true to his craft and doesn't "sell out". Jeff Gurner is the perfect choice for this read and did a fantastic job with all voice changes... not an easy feat with so many characters.
"Thank you for the free story, however........"
I don't wish to sound ungrateful and totally appreciate the free story, however this just wasn't very good overall. I didn't see the point of doing this with these characters . The only thing I can think of is Ms. Rose is trying to capitalize on the "Fifty Shades of Grey" frenzy and bring her name and the Dr. Morgan character to the limelight.
The editing and "phoning in" quality of the individual narrator's audio clips was distracting and stilted. Too bad, as these are very talented narrators.
Two positive notes: The Cotton Malone story was somewhat whole. The audio was free:)
"Didn't know this is just another Romance Novel..."
Well, I've made it halfway through this and I just can't take anymore. This is just another romance novel... not even that well written... with ramped up sex scenes. Told in the 1st person narrative by the female protagonist. You are living in the head of a young 20 something girl. Arggggg!!! "Does he love me? "; "Why is he looking at me like that?" ;"What did he mean when he looked at me like that?";" Why isn't he looking at me?"; "I don't want to be with him"; "I do want to be with him". Then a BDSM type sex scene. Then, "Why didn't he call me?"; "Should I call him?" . Then another BDSM sex scene.
No real depth to the story. Did I mention I don't like Romance Novels.
Others have mentioned they disliked the narrator. I think she did a fine job for what she has to work with. The problem with this audible book is it shouldn't be an audible book. No one could read this well. We all have different ideas of how sex should sound.
I was listening in my car and all it is is porn (not that there is anything wrong with porn, however listening in the car driving down the road with others all around you seems a bit cheesy:)) Part of the problem is there is not a lot of "down time" between porn scenes, so, again, listening for an extended period of time is mentally exhausting... Partly, because the subject matter is pretty hardcore. When you physically read a real hard copy book like this, it is the privacy of your own home, etc, and you are "hearing" the story in your own voice in your own head. With an audible version, you are usually in your car or maybe at the gym or office and you are listening to someone else reading porn. It just doesn't work.
So, if you like romance style novels, I can recommend this book only if you actually read a hard copy version. If you do not like chick flick, romance books, I'd pass on it. Or read the "Story of O", or "Gordon" by Edith Templeton. Much better story of control and submission.
