Excellent performance , but a tortured plot. I liked to listen over and over, but not with this one. Of course I am a prude.

The new Detective Inspector Hardcastle mystery - When the body of actress Victoria Hart is found in the early hours of Christmas Day, Hardcastle and Marriotts investigations lead them to the Beaux Belles revue, where a scantily clad Victoria persuaded young men to enlist with the promise of a kiss. It seems the alluring actress had many admirers, and when the recruiting sergeant is found dead, a link to the army can no longer be ignored...

I want to like this series. I started with Hardcastle's Burglar. I wish I had saved my money on this one. I just do not think the author likes women. So far I have listened to four of this series, and the mystery always seems to revolve around whores. If you start with that premise you can soon figure "who dunnit"
The performance however; is always spectacular . How the actor keeps track of the varied characters mystifies me.

I am an adult, but I love Riordan's youth novels. This is too heavy, but I would not slam it except for the language. I get very tired of hearing the same word over and over.and over.

This is a repeater. The narrator put me off at first, but she did a first rate job. Sister Magdalen is back with another of her spectacular rescues and Cadfael contrives a happy ending from very little cloth. If you like Cadfael this is a safe bet.

But soon Ailnoth's true nature surfaces - harsh, cold-hearted, and merciless - and someone lures him from his home and murders him. Who in Shrewsbury would kill a priest on Christmas Day?

    Story

I usually enjoy listening to Cadfael mysteries over and over, but I found this formulaic and disjointed. The dialog which is usually close to poetry just plods, and the plot was predictable.
The butter on the bun though was a mushy ending to a totally improbable story.

The performance was dead on, just not much to work with.

I Hesitated to write this so I listened again. It just isn't there.

Best-selling historian and philosopher Will Durant devoted his entire life to studying the most significant eras, individuals, and achievements of human history. Here is a summation of Durant's work, as he presents the best of world history. Filled with Durant's renowned wit, knowledge, and unique ability to explain events in simple and exciting terms, it is a concise liberal arts education.

I bought this dispite the negative reviews. I am a total Durant fan. Read the History of the World, Yup that one.The first bit is great and engrossing, 100 greatest books does not make a great read. This might be better in hardcover. But have been through it twice and will plunge in again. I prefer books good for read after read, this qualifies , but you better like Durant.

How does Hugh become Sheriff? Well here you go great stuff. Well worth more than one listen. I do not want to give it away, but Sister Magdalen is back proving that redemption can precede contrition.! As always a moral but still EXCITING story. Peters handles morality without being stuffy. If you are sick of smut but still want to be engaged give Cafael a try.

Outstanding story by Ellis Peters. Peters as always is careful to let his characters grow and learn, well maybe not Prior Robert, and Brother Jerome, but the main protaganist has a lesson to learn and a lesson to teach. I am a serious Cadfael fan, and a visit with Cadfael is a respite from pressure. If you have never visited Cadfael before, I recommend " One Corpse Too Many" for your first listen. Then just enjoy.
