I've enjoyed all of the Walt Longmire series of books by Craig Johnson. This was no exception. I love the characters, the humor. George Guidall is one of my favorite narrators...
I wouldn't recommend this book to a friend. I realize that WWII was a long time ago and a lot has changed about how good owners care for their animals, but I just kept thinking that the dog's owner was very irresponsible. I also didn't like the way the author told us what the dog was thinking. I have dogs. I train dogs. I believe dogs live in the moment and I don't think many of the thoughts the author attributed to the dog are realistic.
The author gave the dog dialog like he was a human. I would've liked the story better without that.
I don't think I had a favorite scene.
No. I did finish it, but there are a lot of books I certainly would've enjoyed a lot more.
The author says in the preface that as much as possible he used the manuscript that was actually written by the main character. If you've ever read any of Albert Payson Terhune's books, I felt like this was written in that kind of style (Super hero dog, out-thinking the humans, saves the day over and over. Irresponsible owner allows the dog to run wild, savage the farmer's sheep, etc. and almost loses him several times because of the owner's irresponsibility). I think the story is interesting, it's just unfortunate the way it was written...
I enjoyed Michael McGarrity's new book. It's different than his other books--following a family in New Mexico in the 1800's and early 1900's. The ending left me wondering if there will be a sequel. George Guidall is a wonderful narrator.
It was an entertaining listen. I've always enjoyed Pat McManus' sense of humor. There are several laugh out loud moments in the book.
If you like the Agatha Raisin stories by M. C. Beaton you might like this book. Both are nice little mysteries with fun characters.
The narrator did a good job. I'd be happy to listen to more books he narrates.
It took me a couple of days to find time to listen to the whole book, but I was still thinking about some of the characters several days later.
If you're looking for an entertaining few hours of listening, you might enjoy this book!
I've enjoyed all of Lisa Scottoline's books--until now... I slogged through and managed to listen to the whole thing, but didn't enjoy it very much. I can't recommend it.
