In July 1862, Confederate Captain Raphael Semmes took command of a secret new warship. At the helm of the Alabama, he became the most hated and feared man along the Union coast, as well as a Confederate legend. Now, with unparalleled authority, depth, and a vivid sense of the excitement and danger of the time, Stephen Fox describes Captain Semmes's remarkable wartime exploits.

I enjoyed this book. Yes is does go deep into the background of Semmes, but I think it is important in understanding who he was. It is not the greatest book about Naval strategy, but it is a great book about the story of the Alabama and the life of Captain Semmes.

  • Revenge of the Whale: The True Story of the Whaleship Essex

Can a whale attack a ship? The shipwrecked crew of the whaleship Essex was living proof that it could when a whale displayed a fury never before witnessed, ramming and sinking their vessel in a matter of minutes in November 1820. The story of their survival is one rarely spoken of by Nantucketers even to this day, but National Book Award-winning author Nathaniel Philbrick courageously brings every shocking detail into the light.

Mark says: "So great I want to hear the longer version."

Outstanding. One amazing story, coupled with the fact that it is well written and easy to read (or listen to in this case).
