An Asst. DA’s 14 year old son is indicted for murdering another boy in his class. As you can imagine, much disruption ensues in this serviceable legal thriller, but in this author’s version of real life there are no happy endings whatsoever.
I chose this title because it was set in the state where I live (Massachusetts), and I had recently served on a jury in a criminal case. While I found the story told from the Asst. (eventually ex) DA’s insider point of view to be very interesting, I found it hard to have sympathy for any of the characters. I think the “shocking” ending wasn’t much of a surprise, gruesome and ugly though it was.
The narrator made a pretty good job of it, and it did keep my interest.
