When her older sister runs away to marry a rodeo cowboy, sixth-grader Alice Winston is left to bear the brunt of her family's troubles: a depressed, bed-ridden mother; a reticent, overworked father; and a rundown horse ranch. As the hottest summer in 15 years unfolds and bills pile up, Alice is torn between dreams of escaping the loneliness of her duty-filled life and a longing to help her father mend their family and the ranch.

    "An Enjoyable Listen"

Although I often thought that this story was going nowhere, it is beautifully written and read. An enjoyable listening experience as long as you don't NEED drama.

Could you survive on your own, in the wild, with everyone out to make sure you don't live to see the morning? In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by 12 outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.

    "A wonderful story"
    Overall

This is one of those rare stories I "couldn't put down." I usually listen to books on tape in the car, but, every once in a while a book demands to be heard from start to finish. I plugged in the headphones to listen straight through - clean the whole house top to bottom or take long walks until the end. Wonderful!

Originally published in 1973, the groundbreaking, uninhibited story of Isadora Wing and her desire to fly free caused a national sensation. In The New York Times, Henry Miller compared it to his own classic, Tropic of Cancer and predicted that "this book will make literary history..." It has sold more than 12-million copies. Now, after 30 years, the revolutionary novel known as Fear of Flying still stands as a timeless tale of self-discovery, liberation, and womanhood.

I'd heard about this book for so many years and I was always curious. It's VERY entertaining, but because of the the sexually graphic language I listened to it secretly! It also made me realize that not much has changed when it comes to the spoils of sexuality.
