From the Booker Prize-winning author of The Remains of the Day and When We Were Orphans, comes an unforgettable edge-of-your-seat mystery that is at once heartbreakingly tender and morally courageous about what it means to be human.

Christopher says: "Moving, haunting, but slow developing"
    "not for adults"
    Overall

I was very annoyed to hear that this book is from AudibleKids! The description page should have made that clear.
The mystery is very easy to solve and the book is about two hours longer than it should be. There are many extremely long and tedious explanations. I won't bother finishing it.

The day before Halloween 2004 was the last day on Earth for respected, well-liked college professor Fred Jablin. That morning, a neighbor discovered his body lying in a pool of blood in the driveway of Jablin's Virginia home. Police immediately turned their attentions to the victim's ex-wife, Piper, a petite, pretty Texas lawyer who had lost a bitter custody battle and would do anything to get her kids back. But Piper was in Houston, 1,000 miles away, at the time of the slaying and couldn't possibly have been the killer...could she?

Story was OK. I wanted the narrator to calm down - the story wasn't THAT interesting, and overacting did not make it more so.

A clear-sighted revelation, a deep penetration into the world of Scientology by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of the The Looming Tower, the now-classic study of al-Qaeda’s 9/11 attack. Based on more than 200 personal interviews with both current and former Scientologists - both famous and less well known - and years of archival research, Lawrence Wright uses his extraordinary investigative ability to uncover for us the inner workings of the Church of Scientology.

I learned very little about the teachings of L.R. Hubbard and Scientology; and more about Tom Cruise than I was interested in. Narration was overblown, as if volume and pretension would make content more important.

This mesmerizing first novel tells the epic journey of Lin, an escaped convict who flees maximum security prison in Australia to disappear into the underworld of contemporary Bombay. Accompanied by his guide and faithful friend, Prabaker, Lin searches for love and meaning while running a clinic in one of the city's poorest slums and serving his apprenticeship in the dark arts of the Bombay mafia. The keys to unlock the mysteries that bind Lin are held by two people: his mentor Khader Khan, mafia godfather and criminal-philosopher; and the beautiful, elusive Karla, whose passions are driven by dangerous secrets.

The story is not good, and it's there only to hold the philosophy, which is endless, and trite. Also there's lots of brutal beatings, with detail. Way too much testosterone! I couldn't finish it.

In 2000, Douglas Preston and his family moved to Florence, Italy, fulfilling a long-held dream. They put their children in Italian schools and settled into a 14th century farmhouse in the green hills of Florence, where they devoted themselves to living la dolce vita while Preston wrote his best-selling suspense novels. All that changed when he discovered that the lovely olive grove in front of their house had been the scene of a double-murder.

    B. Lingerfelt says: "Enjoyable true-crime novel"
    "endless, going nowhere, annoying"
    Overall

I finally gave up after hearing half, and I gave it my best try. It goes backward and forward in time, the narrator goes in and out of an Italian accent, even in the middle of sentences. True crime is my favorite, but this is so complicated that the story is lost.

  • Shake the Devil Off: A True Story of the Murder that Rocked New Orleans

They looked like a slightly mischievous version of the all-American couple: a handsome army veteran and his gorgeous artist girlfriend. Zackery Bowen, after completing his tour of Iraq, came home to New Orleans, and in two weeks before Hurricane Katrina, he met Addie Hall. Their improvised, hard-partying endurance during and after the storm inspired news outlets around the world to feature the couple as the personification of the indomitable spirit of New Orleans. But beneath the surface, trouble was brewing.

    Robin says: "Avoid this one!"
    "Not really interesting"
    Overall

The whole story is told in the introduction, and the details of the book don't really add much of interest. The reader reads with too much expression, as though he's reading to children, or giving a sermon. At the end are three hours of the story of New Orleans, but I'm not going to listen to all of it. Enough already.

Sam and Henny Pollit have too many children, too little money, and too much loathing for one another. As Sam uses the children's adoration to feed his own voracious ego, Henny watches in bleak despair, knowing the bitter reality that lies just below his mad visions. A chilling novel of family life, this work is acknowledged as a contemporary classic.

Kristin says: "psychological torture in the best way"

I listened for an hour or so. Nothing happened, and there was no indication that anything would happen. And I didn't care. It sounds like 120 year old book for kids.

Little Heathens is a compelling memoir of her hardscrabble life on an Iowa farm during the Great Depression. As foreclosure fragments her family, five-year-old Mildred and her three siblings find refuge with her grandparents - God-fearing farmers, enjoying a modest retirement. When the "little heathens" flush the seniors and their child-rearing skills out of retirement, the grandparents deploy tough but loving bedtime schedules, Bible and prayer routines, and plenty of character-building chores.

Bonny says: "An Enjoyable Learning Experience!"
    "BORING"

It's a mystery why this book won any prize. It is quite boring, dry, and soulless.

As a little girl, Jane has no one. Her mother, Vivienne Margaux, the powerful head of a major New York theater company has no time for her. She does have one friend - Michael - but no one can see him except her. When Jane is in her 30s, working for her mother's company, she is just as alone as she was as a child. Then she finds Michael again - handsome and just the same as she remembers him, only now he's not imaginary.

overly romantic, full of cliches, might be OK for 12 year old girls except for the sex scenes. Really not at all good.
