In pre-war Prague, the dreams of two young lovers are shattered when they are separated by the Nazi invasion. Then, decades later, thousands of miles away in New York, there's an inescapable glance of recognition between two strangers. Providence is giving Lenka and Josef one more chance. From the glamorous ease of life in Prague before the Occupation, to the horrors of Nazi Europe, The Lost Wife explores the power of first love, the resilience of the human spirit, and the strength of memory.

What made the experience of listening to The Lost Wife the most enjoyable?

The alternation between the male and female narratators helped to add suspense as the story unfolded. I couldn't wait to hear what had happened to Josef after hearing an episode from Lenka's experience, and vice versa.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I can't remember the last time I cried while reading a book, but I cried several times while listening to The Lost Wife. This book touched on so many different types of love. For me, love was the message of this story.

Facing down an unprecedented malevolent enemy, the government responds with a nuclear attack. America as it was is gone forever, and now every citizen - from the President of the United States to the homeless on the streets of New York City - will fight for survival. In a wasteland born of rage and fear, populated by monstrous creatures and marauding armies, earth's last survivors have been drawn into the final battle between good and evil, that will decide the fate of humanity.

Interesting story, I just couldn't sympathize with the characters for the most part. I've tried to write the next sentence several times now, and just can't seem to pin down the right words. I felt that while the motivations, inner thoughts, and personas of the evil characters were very well defined, those of the good guys were not as presented as completely, especially as the book progressed. It's probably more fun for an author to come up with this stuff as it relates to the villains.

The narrator did an excellent job. Consistent voices for each character.

Overall, an interesting listen, just not a masterpiece in my opinion.

This true modern masterpiece is built around the two fateful words that make up the title and herald the end - “Alas, Babylon.” When a nuclear holocaust ravages the United States, a thousand years of civilization are stripped away overnight, and tens of millions of people are killed instantly. But for one small town in Florida, miraculously spared, the struggle is just beginning, as men and women of all backgrounds join together to confront the darkness....

I very much enjoy post-apocalyptic fiction (especially the type without zombies or aliens!). Although written more than 50 years ago, the book portrays a realistic scenario of might happen today in the event of nuclear war -- except that contemporary humans would be even less likely to survive and adapt, because of our even greater reliance on technology and electricity. I'm certainly thinking about beefing up my family's emergency supplies after listening to this book. Makes me want to buy a set of encylopedia and a couple hundred pounds of salt. The narrator does an excellent job.

Keith Stewart, a retiring and ingenious engineer, could not have been happier in his little house in the shabby London suburb of Ealing. There he invented the mini-motor, the six-volt generator, and the tiny Congreve clock. Then a chain of events sweeps him into deep waters and leads him to his happiest discovery yet.

Great story, excellent narration. I so enjoyed the wonderful mechanical and engineering details. Droll is the word that comes to mind. Just delightful.

It is January 1944 - and as Allied troops prepare for D day, Nazi scientists develop a toxic nerve gas that will repel and wipe out any invasion force. To salvage the planned assault, two vastly different but equally determined men are sent to infiltrate the secret concentration camp where the poison gas is being perfected on human subjects. Their only objective: destroy all traces of the gas and the men who created it - no matter how many lives may be lost...including their own.

The narrator delivers an incredible range of accents, for both male and female characters. The plot is very interesting and exciting, but the story really started to drag about two thirds of the way through.

Interesting premise -- just too hard to listen to! I know the book is written for a younger audience, so I can overlook the juvenile dialogue designed to appeal to pre-teen boys, but the narration..... odd choice of narrators, and inconsistent voices/accents.
