In a city of daimons, rigid class lines separate the powerful from the power-hungry. And at the heart of The City is the Carnival of Souls, where both murder and pleasure are offered up for sale. Once in a generation, the carnival hosts a deadly competition that allows every daimon a chance to join the ruling elite. Without the competition, Aya and Kaleb would both face bleak futures - if for different reasons. For each of them, fighting to the death is the only way to try to live.

What does James Marsters bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

James PERFORMS rather than NARRATES. His voices and subtle inflections, along with his emotions are always right there on the surface drawing you into every scene - making you feel what the characters are feeling.

    Any additional comments?

I found the plot a little slow developing due to so many diverse characters, but James Marsters kept it flowing so that I didn't get frustrated with it. Ends on a cliff so I hope the next installment comes soon and is more action-packed now that we know all the players.

Every year, the average American eats 33 pounds of cheese (triple what we ate in 1970) and 70 pounds of sugar (about 22 teaspoons a day). We ingest 8,500 milligrams of salt a day, double the recommended amount, and almost none of that comes from the shakers on our table. It comes from processed food. It’s no wonder, then, that one in three adults, and one in five kids, is clinically obese.

Although at times repetitive, the data presented in this book is astounding and eyeopening! How did our country and our kids come to be hooked on salt, sugar, and fat-laden convenience foods? It wasn't by chance! And the most shocking thing is that the GOVERNMENT has helped the food giants all along the way. Well worth the listen!

In Wishful Drinking, Carrie Fisher tells the true and intoxicating story of her life with inimitable wit. Born to celebrity parents, she was picked to play a princess in a little movie called Star Wars when only 19 years old. "But it isn't all sweetness and light sabers."

I really didn't know anything about Carrie Fisher other than 'Princess Leia', so I was surprised by her dry wit, honesty, and ability to laugh at herself and her whole (mostly pathetically sad) life. This has definitely made me want to seek out more of her books. I found myself laughing out loud throughout. A jewel of a book. Well worth the listen.

Although this series started off with a couple of hiccups for me: so very many characters and plots to track, and fight scenes that seemed interminable, I stuck with it because I had faith in Jim Butcher, and he did not disappoint! This series only got better as it went along with wonderful character development as well as intriguing problems to be solved by the main hero.

My only complaint now is that I wish there was more! It certainly was left open for more books to follow, and I hope that happens. I will miss these characters. Jim Butcher made you feel for each and every one of them - even the anti-heroes, as he spun the tale and showed that most everyone thought they were doing the right thing, even if how they went about it seemed 'wrong'. Highly entertaining and imaginative story. Well worth the listen.

After being murdered by a mystery assailant, navigating his way through the realm between life and death, and being brought back to the mortal world, Harry realizes that maybe death wasn’t all that bad - because he is no longer Harry Dresden, Chicago’s only professional wizard. He is now Harry Dresden, Winter Knight to Mab, the Queen of Air and Darkness. After Harry had no choice but to swear his fealty, Mab wasn’t about to let something as petty as death steal away the prize she had sought for so long.

Wow. Coming back from the dead is hard, but for Harry Dresden it's like being tossed from the frying pan into the fire! He not only has new enemies to deal with, including his 'savior' Mab and her faerie co-horts, but old, unexpected enemies as well. There is a TON of action in this book, and Harry has to fight not only his enemies but his own newly-acquired Winter Knight power in the process. Harry, of course, being Harry, tries to keep his friends out of the fight, but, his friends, being who they are, won't hear of it, of course. The character progression of all the characters since his death is amazing - from Butters to Molly to Mouse.

James Marsters is a ...errr .. master with all the nuances of each character and makes the ride so very enjoyable. He is, and always will be, Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden. You can feel the emotions, hear the pain, the tears in his voice, hear the triumph and the fury. He pulls you into the story with his performance and literally makes it impossible to stop listening and, when you're done, you simply must listen again!

Despite all Harry has been through, this book only seems to demonstrate just how much further he still has to go. Everything has changed for so many of the characters - I can't wait to see where Jim Butcher takes our favorite professional wizard and his band of buggered next.

In his acclaimed Codex Alera novels, best-selling author Jim Butcher has created a fascinating world in which the powerful forces of nature take physical form. For millennia, the people of Alera have used their unique bond with these elementals for protection. Now, as enemies become allies, and friends become bitter foes, a danger beyond reckoning looms. . . .

I've enjoyed this series, but this book really brings many of the personal relastionships to the fore and clears up many of the mysteries that have been building. I must say I've enjoyed this book the best by far. Well written and well narrated. Some fight scenes carry on a bit long for my tastes in this series, but this book did not have that issue for me as there was more character development and adventure with fewer actual battle scenes. Very well done all around.

I'm finding this series enjoyable and engaging. There are always at least three plots going at once, and clues to larger underlying mysteries are revealed along the way. In addition, Jim Butcher is not afraid to kill off a character, even one that he has a fair amount of time invested in, which I find refreshing and keeps you guessing who will be next. I found it a hard 'book' to put down.

My only complaints are the vast number of characters, which can at times get confusing, and sometimes the fight scenes go on too long. The narrator does a good job with distinct voices for each main character, but when you have soooo very many supporting 'cast', it's virtually impossible to have a different inflection for each of them. Overall, well worth the listen.

I tried this book/series because I adore the Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher, turns out this is much more 'Lord of the Rings' than anything like the writing he does in the Dresden Files. Which doen't mean it's bad, simply different. I had expected the same syle of writing, the same wit, but this story, for the most part, lacks that. What it doesn't lack is imagination.

Jim Butcher has created a world that is as wild and wonderful as J.R.R. Tolkien's. The vast number of protagonists and antagonists and those that switch sides in the middle made the going a little slow at first as you get to know them and their worlds, but when everything finally came together the result was facinating. I have to say that, as I did with Lord of the Rings, I found the final battle to be too long and drawn out, but apart from that the book was enjoyable. It left some mysteries hanging at the end, which is a typical Jim Butcher style, and now that we know all the characters, I look forward to the next books delving more into their emotions, interactions, and personal struggles.

The reluctant hero, Tavi, shows the potential for allowing Butcher's wit to be displayed in the future and the various couples that the author has drawn together have the potential for heartbreak or joy. I look forward to seeing where he takes these characters in the next book.

Kate Reading did a very good job with the voices of men and women alike; I found her delivery enjoyable.

Some people complained about the 'horns' that sound at what must've been the end of the original tapes/CDs. I never found them to be annoying at all - the sound really goes with the story, to be honest, kind of a medieval call to arms. I was happy that I knew what they were before hearing them, however, otherwise it might've been confusing at first.

Overall, if you liked 'Lord of the Rings', I think you'll enjoy this book. If you're expecting writing in the style of Dresden - don't. It's not.

Wow. Harry certainly has more changes in this installment of the Dresden Files than he's ever had before. As always a fast-moving thriller with heart-wrenching stakes and an ending that will leave you breathlessly awaiting the next installment. James Marsters, as always, is superb! You can not just hear, but FEEL the emotion - the tears, the anger, the conviction, the fright - coming through in his performance. If you don't choke up a few times during this performance, you're one tough cookie. Highly enjoyable - unable to put it down ... or take the headphones off - whatever.

Another wonderful addition to the Dresden 'Verse made even better by the addtion of Molly Carpenter and her magical and personal struggles. Mouse is turning out to be a forbidable character in his own right and is a welcome addtion to 'Team Dresden' (or 'Team Murphy', as the case may be). Jim Butcher manages to keep several sub-plots going along throughout the series while casting Harry and his cohorts into deep, dark danger. There is rarely a lull in the action of one sort or another, but he manages to interject clear explanations to keep all the balls in the air at once and allow you to follow them all easily. I particularly loved the imagination and detailed description of Queen Mab's stronghold, very well written; excellent details.

As always, James Marsters does a superb job on the telling of the tale. His emotion-filled voice draws you into the scenes, making your heart race along with the characters, your eyes mist over when his do, and even laugh aloud at times. Well written and well performed. Perfect.
