  • The Wal-Mart Effect

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 27 mins)
    • By Charles Fishman
    • Narrated By Alan Sklar

Drawing on unprecedented interviews with former Wal-Mart executives and a wealth of staggering dataincluding facts such as this: Americans spend $36 million an hour at Wal-Mart stores, this text is an intimate look at a business that is dramatically reshaping the American economy.

    Michael says: "Excellent, Balanced View"
    "A Very enlightening book."

I have a couple of friends who work for Walmart. Things that they have told me about the place got me curious. I was certainly delighted to find this audible book.
I live in a very small town and we are getting a new Walmart super center built right down the road.
I can honestly say that I now consider myself a "former" Walmart shopper. I will certainly take my business to Target. Yes, I'll miss Sam's Club but I'll get over it!
I recommend this book to anyone who is a Walmart shopper or a former shopper.
It simply amazed me to hear some of the tactics used by Walmart to be able to keep their prices lower. 95% of the products that Walmart carries are made in China! They are trying to bankrupt Target, Kmart, Sears, Lowes, & Home Depot just to name a few.
Walmart carries the same products such as Lowes or Home Depot. The difference in the products other than the price is that Walmart has those same name brand products made in China, using cheaper and more light weight parts. Walmart coerces those manufacturers to be the ones who have to repair or replace the product if it malfunctions. Even though Walmart had it manufactured in China. This of course, is very costly to the maker. If the maker doesn't agree to these arrangements, then Walmart refuses to carry the product.
I will NEVER set foot inside a Walmart again.
    If I can't buy American, I don't need it.

  • Helmet for My Pillow: From Parris Island to the Pacific

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 35 mins)
    • By Robert Leckie
    • Narrated By John Allen Nelson
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Robert Leckie enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in January 1942, shortly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. In Helmet for My Pillow, we follow his odyssey, from basic training on Parris Island, South Carolina, all the way to the raging battles in the Pacific, where some of the war's fiercest fighting took place. Recounting his service with the 1st Marine Division and the brutal action on Guadalcanal, New Britain, and Peleliu, Leckie spares no detail of the horrors and sacrifices of war.

Sean says: "A classic narrative of the Pacific War"
"Fills in a LOT of missing details of The Pacific."

I loved the series "The Pacific", but, I could never figure out why after 4 years in the Marine Corp. that Leckie still remained a private! Well, this book will certainly let you know why. Told with emotion, spirit and humor. Makes you love the guy and some of his antics and attitude!

  • True Compass: A Memoir

    • UNABRIDGED (18 hrs and 56 mins)
    • By Edward M. Kennedy
    • Narrated By John Bedford Lloyd
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

In this historic memoir, the late Ted Kennedy takes us inside his family, re-creating life with his parents and brothers and explaining their profound impact on him. For the first time, he describes his heartbreak and years of struggle in the wake of their deaths. Through it all, he describes his work in the Senate on the major issues of our time - civil rights, Vietnam, Watergate, the quest for peace in Northern Ireland - and the cause of his life: improved health care for all Americans

Mark says: "A Walk through the 20th Century"
    "What an awesome book."

This is truly one of the best books I have heard in years! Senator Kennedy's story shows what a humble man he was. You will get answers to questions that you may have had, for years.

  • I Feel Bad About My Neck: And Other Thoughts On Being A Woman

    • UNABRIDGED (3 hrs and 53 mins)
    • By Nora Ephron
    • Narrated By Nora Ephron
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

With her disarming, intimate, completely accessible voice, and dry sense of humor, Nora Ephron shares with us her ups and downs in I Feel Bad About My Neck, a candid, hilarious look at women who are getting older and dealing with the tribulations of maintenance, menopause, empty nests, and life itself.

Kestrel says: "Don't make me get out of the car..."
    "UGH! One of the worst...."

I've ever read or listened to. Save your money! Boring, Boring and Even More Boring. Truly one of the most ridiculous books out there.

  • Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India, and Indonesia

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 52 mins)
    • By Elizabeth Gilbert
    • Narrated By Elizabeth Gilbert

Around the time Elizabeth Gilbert turned 30, she went through an early-onslaught midlife crisis. She went through a divorce, a crushing depression, another failed love, and the eradication of everything she ever thought she was supposed to be. To recover from all this, Gilbert took a radical step. She got rid of her belongings, quit her job, and undertook a yearlong journey around the world, all alone. This is the absorbing chronicle of that year.

    Kerry says: "Witty and Wonderful"
    "Bored me to tears...."

I'm rather disappointed that I listened to "Oprah" on this one. It bored me to tears. I did force myself to finish it, just in case it picked up, but it never did. I'd save my money.

  • The Tin Roof Blowdown: A Dave Robicheaux Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (13 hrs and 8 mins)
    • By James Lee Burke
    • Narrated By Will Patton
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Dave Robicheaux returns in another Bayou adventure, this one more gruesome and gut-wrenching than any that have come before. Hurricane Katrina has ravaged New Orleans, leaving the streets and buildings flooded and the city awash with opportunists, looters, and vicious criminals. There is no order, no law. Police are shooting randomly at innocent people, prison guards have abandoned their posts, and bodies float through the streets and hang from trees.

Deborah says: "How Does One Manage?"
    "Truly, One of the best!"

Excellent Story. And the narrator is AWESOME. He captures each and every single character with such authenticity that you can't help being sucked into this story. I've been looking at this audible book for months and I'm glad that I finally decided to listen to it. The story is told with such depth of each character and scene that you don't want to turn it off. I give this one 10 stars.

  • Now & Then

    • UNABRIDGED (5 hrs and 28 mins)
    • By Robert B. Parker
    • Narrated By Joe Mantegna
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Spenser knows something's amiss the moment Dennis Doherty walks into his office. The guy's aggressive yet wary, in the way men frightened for their marriages always are. So when Doherty asks Spenser to investigate his wife Jordan's abnormal behavior, Spenser agrees. A job's a job, after all.

    Elaine says: "a good one!"
"WORST book I've ever tried to listen to!"

This was the worst $9.95 I've ever spent on a book! The story would be good BUT, all it seems to say is "I said", "He said" and "She said". The sentences are 1-5 words long, followed by "I said, she said or He said." And there seems to be an emphasis on those words which makes that the only thing your hearing! Please, DO NOT waste your money on this one! It's awful!

  • Mayday

    • UNABRIDGED (13 hrs and 15 mins)
    • By Nelson DeMille, Thomas Block
    • Narrated By Scott Brick
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Twelve miles above the Pacific Ocean, a missile strikes a jumbo passenger jet and leaves the flight crew either crippled or dead. This is the story of how three survivors must achieve the impossible and land the plane. Master storyteller Nelson DeMille and veteran pilot Thomas Block collaborated on Mayday, the most terrifyingly realistic air disaster thriller of all time. Also available abridged.

Douglas says: "Great adventure! Hard to put down."
"The absolute BEST book I've ever listened to!"

You certainly will not go wrong with this book. I have never been so riveted by a book in the 50+ years I have been reading. This book has plenty of suspense and great story line, if not downright scary. (Scary because it has a real possibility of happening.) I found myself getting up in the middle of my sleep to come and listen to another chapter. Never has that happened to me. The story teller is brilliant as well. This is a book that I will listen to again and again.

  • Up Country

    • UNABRIDGED (28 hrs and 37 mins)
    • By Nelson DeMille
    • Narrated By Scott Brick
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

In the latest from Nelson DeMille (author of The Lion's Game), Paul Brenner is called out of CID retirement to investigate the murder 30 years ago of an army lieutenant in Vietnam. Brenner's trip up country, with a beautiful American expatriate for company, will lead him to uncover an explosive, long-buried secret.

James B says: "You Must Read Up Country"
"One of the best I've ever heard or read..."

I have literally read or listened to thousands of books. And this is truly one of the best fiction books I've ever read/heard. This is one of the very few books that has kept my full attention and I didn't want it to end. This book has everything in it, suspense, mystery, sex, and so much more. It also enlightened me even more on Vietnam and the Vietnam war. This is worth the read. It is something that I will keep and listen to again. Get it, you won't regret it.

  • The Lion's Game

    • UNABRIDGED (24 hrs and 45 mins)
    • By Nelson DeMille
    • Narrated By Scott Brick
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

To survive in a game with no rules at all, John Corey must invent a strategy that includes no luck at all. He and the Anti-Terrorist Task Force must stop "The Lion," an alleged Libyan terrorist with the instincts of a wild animal, the bloodlust of a carnivore, and the boldness and speed of a cat of prey.

    Toni says: "Remarkable!"
    "I couldn't stop listening..."

DeMille has written another riveting suspense thriller! He has given us the most diabolical antagonist that we can imagine, and returns the irascible John Corey as the wisecracking protagonist.
You can't and won't go wrong with this book!

  • Tilt-a-Whirl

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 18 mins)
    • By Chris Grabenstein
    • Narrated By Jeff Woodman
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

There isn't much fun in the sun when a billionaire real estate tycoon is found murdered on the Tilt-a-Whirl at a seedy seaside amusement park in the otherwise quiet summer tourist town of Sea Haven. John Ceepak, a former MP just back from Iraq, has just joined the Sea Haven police department. The job offer came from an old Army buddy who hoped to give Ceepak at least a summer's worth of rest and relaxation to help him forget the horrors of war. Instead, Ceepak will head up the murder investigation.

    Bryan says: "A Guilty Pleasure"
    "Loved This!"

My first book by this man and I absolutely loved it! Very much like CH, but, a style all of his own and a story line that is all his own. I look forward to reading/hearing his other books. You can't go wrong here. Good story line, good narrator, great who done it.
