On a spring evening in 1140 Shrewsbury, the midnight matins at the Benedictine abbey suddenly reverberate with an unholy sound—a hunt in full cry. Pursued by a drunken mob, the quarry is running for its life. When the frantic creature bursts in to claim sanctuary, Brother Cadfael finds himself fighting off armed townsmen to save a terrified young man

Would you try another book from Ellis Peters and/or Vanessa Benjamin?

Yes Ellis Peters is a first rate story teller. Yes I have enjoyed Vanessa Benjamin when the story fits her vocal range.

What didn’t you like about Vanessa Benjamin’s performance?

Females sound like children imitating grownups when attempting to reproduce male voices. The storyline is too masculine for a female narrator. Predominantly male characters.

Was The Sanctuary Sparrow worth the listening time?

    No

    Any additional comments?

To be fair males also fare poorly when attempting to voice female characters.

  • Behold, Here's Poison

A witty, intelligent, and delectable mystery from Georgette Heyer. This British "cozy" mystery has eccentric characters, sparkling dialogue, and an intricate plot that is just plain fun. Take one rambling country house whose owner is found dead, supposedly poisoned. Add one ill-assorted family circle of very odd people, all with excellent motives for murder.

What disappointed you about Behold, Here's Poison?

    Utterly unlikeable characters.

Would you recommend Behold, Here's Poison to your friends? Why or why not?

No. Yak! Yak! Yak! for unrelenting hours.

    Any additional comments?

It's the first novel that had me wanting a good stiff drink. To be fair I surrendered after midway and couldn't care less how it all came out. I never quit a listen before but this was torture.
The narator has excellent range and showed great stamina to complete his appointed rounds. Will definetly look for more of his work.
