I haven't listened to a production better than this in years. The book is well written and the acting and voices enhance an already good book. I will be watching for another book or production from this author.
My 50 + years in Florida I've seen many changes some good but most not so good. The historic changes and sacrifices these families made to settle this land is very interesting.
One of the top ten books I've ever read or listened to -- well deserving of a pulitzer prize winner. This book is required reading in many school districts because of the historical aspects. The characters are also very well developed.
Tells a forgotten story.
The Royal Marines have very few stories written about them. The series covers this family of Marines through generations. The brutality of World War 1 has been forgotten by most. This book is not anti-war but it does make you realize the incredible loss war imposes on a country.
Quite a saga.
I like all of Mr Engene's reads from Casca to this title.
A great story with a strong character. At times a little corny but most of the story was great. The corny parts were balanced by the unvarnished brutality of the outlaw gangs and Indians. This was actually like three novels in one and a great value for one credit.
This book was very good but the narrator made it a great listen! His accents were believable and not overdone. This was a very pleasant surprise and I was sorry it ended.
Great story about the relationships between dogs and humans. The contribution of dogs in the service was largely ignored except by their handlers and those that owe their lives to them. This was a story that needed to be told and thank God the policy has now changed.
Sometimes it is nice to just go on a good adventure and this was exactly what I needed. The characters were good and the description of Jamaica and other colonies almost put you there.
Someone must of had a deadline to meet to publish this book. Spencer couldn't pull this story off with all his glib charm. Not much plot -- Spencer and the author wander aimlessly thru this one to a equally poor finish. I have always been a big Spencer fan but I want my money back. My biggest regret is that i tried to stay with the story thinking it might get better. Shame on you Mr. Parker we have come to expect better from you.
I read this after reading his book "Chasing Fireflies" which was great. This book was good but seemed to drag in a few places. I like Charles Martin's writing style. He writes about trailer parks and high society with ease. This is a book I normally would never have picked but it was inspirational. The ending made this a worthwhile read.
Wilbur Smith writes adventures on a grand scale and this is one of his best. The landscape of Africa and the background of events leading to WWI make this a non stop adventure ride. I look forward to every Wilbur Smith book.
