"Very Good"
I read the whistling season a few years back and really liked the book. I liked the writing/prose and the story. I have read a couple of other books Ivan Doig and liked one and hated the other( the eleventh Man ).
Morie was a great character in the whistling season and he is brought back as the main character in this book. He steps off the train and into this book with all his wit, charm and brass knuckles. How could such an educated man be working in a mining town as a undertakers cryer? only Morris Morgan can.
I thing Ivan Doig is a great story teller. He brought the city to life in my mine and it was if I could have been right there and felt the blast of dynamite under the boarding house. When I heard "Ignoramus, I am the librarian!" I knew that Ivan had Created another larger than life character in Samuel S. Sandison. Maybe he will write his story next
I thought the Narrator did a great job. His voice was just right for the book. Good tone and inflection and no grandiose, over the top reading.
"Good Book"
I enjoyed this book very much. Great story, well told. I enjoy WWII submarine books and this is a very good one.
"extraordinary book"
The plot and premise of this book is great, well though out and very imaginative. The novel sucked me in and kept me around just like the visitors to the circus, I have become a Reveur.
The sights, sounds and smells of the circus are so vivid I can still feel it all right now. Jim Dale weaves his own vocal magic into this book in the same way Celia and Marco do to the circus.
I recommend this book to all. You won't be disappointed.
"Trash"
No redemptive value. Nothing to learn, just choppy, vular writing.
Scott Brick does his normal narration, over emphasizing every sentence!!

"TERRIBLE"
SOPHOMORIC,CONTRIVED DRIVEL !!
This book is so bad SOUTH OF BROAD I could not not finish it, not only SOUTH OF BROAD not finish it but not even get through part 1 SOUTH OF BROAD. That is how often those three words were spoken in this book.
I have read a few of his other books and enjoyed them. He does have a reacurring theme to his books. The only thing that I did like in this book is his use of vocabulary words. I look up the definition of every word I don't know and there were 3-4 I had to look up in the couple hours I waisted on this book.
I would give this book 0 stars if I could.
"enjoyable"
This is the second book in a series of three. Each can stand on their own. If you intend on reading all three you should read the first two first, but it wouldn't matter which one first. The Giver (book 1), Gathering Blue (book 2), Messenger (book 3). Definitely read Messenger last.
All the books are short and very interesting. She creates alternative societies in a different future. I thought this (gathering Blue) was the best of the three.
"not for me"
I didn't finish this book, in fact I didn't get past the 4 1/2 hr mark. I was given this book by a friend who said it was a great book. I started to read it two different times and couldn't get into it, so I downloaded it in the hopes that I could get through it that way, Nope and I tried to listen twice.
It just doesn't engage me and it's not the subject matter. I do believe that Christianity is being attacked and demeaned in this country and that morality is at an all time low. The story just bored me, no characters had enough personality to make it believeable or that I cared what happened to them.
The reader did a alright job but the production quality is low. I hope I didn't give up on it to quickly but, I don't think I will try again.
"blah, blah, blah, Crap"
I really enjoyed Atonement. But this book is not my cup of tea.
This book is not bad when telling the story of their lifes before they meet and their meeting and courtship but interspersed is a bunch of sexual disfunction drivel so monotonous and indepth that I couldn't stand to listen. I FF through parts trying to find interesting parts and then the book was over.
The authors voice was fine to listen to, but he tried to make it sould like what he was reading was so monumental and amazing.
Not a book for me.
"very good"
It could be considered a self help book as far as I'm concerned. Very
inlightening. I liked it very much. I know it is a book I will listen
to often.
The reader was OK but his voice went loud and then soft and a
couple of times it paused and the repeated a sentence or two, weird.
I'm going to download it in enhanced quality and see if it's better.
I would have given it 5 stars but for the technical difficulties
"OK, the TV show is better"
I don't say very often that the show or movie is better than the book. In this case the show was first and then some one thought, lets write the book that was written in the show.
I thought that it was a interesting idea, and so I bought the book. The narrator was fine with me, descent voice, tone and inflextion.
The story was good. it mirrored the show, a writer doing a ride-a-long with a cop. In the show the writer is very witty and much better at helping to solve or having ideas to help solve the murder. In the show the two main charactors haven't gone to bed, yet. they have to string it along with the interpersonal conflicts, once they sleep together in tv the show ends soon after. In a book they always have to have a sex scene or two right?
So I enjoyed the listen. You might also.
