Not my style of book. While I have not read the Twilight series I get the feeling this is similar. Teenage girl in love with a sucker (i.e. vampire).

Enjoyed the story and the likeable characters. A little crude, if you are the type that gets offended easily then don't listen to this. As others have commented. If you like Joe Abercrombie you will enjoy this story.

Not too long from today, a new, highly contagious virus makes its way across the globe. Most who get sick experience nothing worse than flu, fever, and headaches. But for the unlucky one percent - and nearly five million souls in the United States alone - the disease causes "Lock In": Victims fully awake and aware, but unable to move or respond to stimulus. The disease affects young, old, rich, poor, people of every color and creed. The world changes to meet the challenge.

First let me say that I have very much enjoyed John Scalzi's past work and that he has been one of my favorite authors. This book was enjoyable to listen too but I did not enjoy it as much as his past work. Essentially this was a detective story with some twist and turns.

You'd think being a Prince in a vast intergalactic empire would be about as good as it gets, particularly when Princes are faster, smarter, and stronger than normal humans. Not to mention being mostly immortal. But it isn't as great as it sounds. Princes need to be hard to kill - as Khemri learns the minute he becomes one - for they are always in danger. Their greatest threat? Other Princes. Every Prince wants to become Emperor, and the surest way to do so is to kill, dishonor, or sideline any potential competitor.

    Story

Very good read and recommend. In some ways I found it not to be the typical Sci-Fi book as there are no great alien battles or unknown beings to contend with. The story follows the personal development of the main character as he learns everything he has been told is not true and that there are more important things than his personal goals and desires.

Yarvi, second son of the feared King Uthrik and the ruthless Queen Laithlin of Gettland, was born with a useless hand, and cannot hold a shield, or do any of the things expected from a man. Left an outcast, he's surrendered his birthright and been given a woman's place as apprentice to Mother Gundring, Gettland's Minister, training to be an adviser, diplomat, healer and translator. But when his father and brother are murdered by Grom-gil-Gorm, King of neighboring Vansterland, Yarvi is forced to take the Black Chair and become king himself.

If you have read other books by the author and enjoyed them you will enjoy this book as well. There are entertaining characters, lots of peril and plenty of time sitting in the car listening while it idles.

Legendary science fiction author Orson Scott Card calls Brandon Sanderson a writer to watch, and Publishers Weekly says his debut is "outstanding." Once the godlike rulers of the capital of Arelon, the inhabitans of Elantris have been imprisoned within themselves, unable to die after the city's magic failed years ago. But when a new prince falls victim to the curse, he refuses to accept his fate.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

The overall story was actually good. The problem is the length of the book and the excessive dialogue. I found I could "zone out" for a few minutes and miss nothing.

Would you be willing to try another book from Brandon Sanderson? Why or why not?

I have read numerous books from the author and very much enjoyed them. I would read the Mistborn series before reading this book.....oh wait,I already did that :)

Do you think Elantris needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

If there is I would not read it.

Garner Nanotechnology is developing nanotech-enhanced protective suits and autonomous first-aid nanobots. It’s cutting-edge stuff, and when it saves Brent Cleary from a pipeline explosion that killed hundreds, the Army takes notice. Near-death experience changes a person, so no one is entirely surprised when easy-going Brent turns somber and studious, focused and cold. Not at first. But Kim O’Donnell, Brent’s best friend, cannot get past some of the changes. This just isn’t her friend, and she wonders what’s gotten into him.

At an exclusive school somewhere outside of Arlington, Virginia, students aren't taught history, geography, or mathematics - at least not in the usual ways. Instead, they are taught to persuade. Here the art of coercion has been raised to a science. Students harness the hidden power of language to manipulate the mind and learn to break down individuals by psychographic markers in order to take control of their thoughts. The very best will graduate as "poets": adept wielders of language who belong to a nameless organization that is as influential as it is secretive.
