Have you ever wondered how a magician saws a woman in half? Or makes coins materialize out of thin air? Or reads your mind? Magic tricks work because humans have a hardwired process of attention and awareness that is hackable. A good magician uses your mind's intrinsic properties against you in a form of mental jujitsu, to fool you every time, even when you know full well that you are being tricked.

The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

Editing this book to half its length would benefit it tremendously. About one third of the way through I began listening at 1.25 speed. One half of the way through I upped it to 1.5 speed. Threw in the towel three fourths of the way through when I realized I had lost any emotional connection to the story. I can't remember a novel I've read recently that was so blatantly overwritten. What a shame. Could have been awesome.

Over five years in the writing, Alice Hoffman’s most ambitious and mesmerizing work ever, a triumph of imagination and research set in ancient Israel. The author of such iconic bestsellers as Illumination Night, Practical Magic, Fortune’s Daughter, and Oprah’s Book Club selection Here on Earth, Alice Hoffman is one of the most popular and memorable writers of her generation. Now, in The Dovekeepers, Hoffman delivers her most masterful work yet - one that draws on her passion for mythology, magic, and archaeology and her inimitable understanding of women.

It's been a long time since I've read a book this strong. It will be a favorite. And the voices of the narrators are perfect in the portrayals of their characters. I've always been a fan of Alice Hoffman, but this one is by far her best yet. Don't miss it.

Following a whirlwind courtship and wedding, the pair set sail for Paris, where they become the golden couple in a lively and volatile group—the fabled “Lost Generation”—that includes Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, and F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald.

Louis Charles ("Lucy") Lynch has spent all his 60 years in upstate Thomaston, New York, married to the same woman, Sarah, for 40 of them, their son now a grown man. Like his late, beloved father, Lucy is an optimist, though he's had plenty of reasons not to be: chief among them his mother, still indomitably alive.

    Overall

Please, please, please, listen to the sample before you buy this book. The wooden, self-conscious narration threatens to suck the very life from this story. I am a big Richard Russo fan, but, unfortunately, I have not been able to get past the awkward reading and feel like I'm forcing myself to continue. What a disappointment.

Although a year has passed, not a day goes by without Meggie thinking of Inkheart, the book whose characters became real. But for Dustfinger, the fire-eater brought into being from words, the need to return to the tale has become desperate. When he finds a crooked storyteller with the ability to read him back, Dustfinger leaves behind his young apprentice Farid and plunges into the medieval world of his past.

    Vanessa says: "Inkspell indeed"
    "Great Narration"
    Overall

This book was a real treat. Brenden Frazer's narration was the best of many great Audible voices: more of a performance than just a reading. I loved Lynn Redgrave's voice in Inkheart, but was not troubled in the least by the change of narrators. Frazer brought this wonderful fantasy to life in a voice worthy of being called 'Silvertongue'. Bravo.

In 1866, 12 men and women and one small child were forced aboard a leaky schooner and cast away to a natural prison on the Hawaiian island of Molokai. Two weeks later, a dozen others were exiled, and then 40 more, and then 100 more. Tracked by bounty hunters and torn screaming from their families, the luckless were loaded into shipboard cattle stalls and abandoned in a lawless place where brutality held sway. Many did not have leprosy, and most of those who did were not contagious.

Unfortunately, the the narrator reads every direct quote in some goofy accent. I found this extremely distracting. All the way through I just kept wishing he'd cut it out.

For 10 summers, the extended Seton family met at their country home in New Hampshire to spend a week together playing tennis, badminton, and golf, and drinking gin and tonic on the homestead porch to celebrate the end of the season. But during the 11th summer, everything changes.
