Khaled Hosseini, the number-one New York Times best-selling author of The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, has written a new novel about how we love, how we take care of one another, and how the choices we make resonate through generations.

I really liked Kite Runner, believed A Thousand Splendid Suns was heartbreaking but even better than Kite Runner, but And the Mountains Echoed is, I believe, the best of all three.

This is multiple stories interconnected by family members, friends, and acquaintences. While listening to the three different narrators, it made these stories more real and interesting. It takes a little getting used to the narrators' voices with accents. I considered purchasing the hardcover book to review for spellings of names and places. This is a book I can listen to over and over again.

I so believe this is a wonderful book and well worth reading or listening! Bravo!

China, 1957: Chairman Mao has declared a new openness in society. “Let a hundred flowers bloom; let a hundred schools of thought contend.” Many intellectuals fear it is only a trick, and Kai Ying’s husband, Sheng, a teacher, has promised not to jeopardize their safety or that of their young son, Tao. But one July morning, just before his sixth birthday, Tao watches helplessly as Sheng is dragged away for writing a letter criticizing the Communist Party and sent to a labor camp for “reeducation”. Once again, Tsukiyama brings us a powerfully moving story of ordinary people facing extraordinary circumstances with grace and courage.

I loved this book and learning about Mao's Hundred Flowers Campaign. The book was engaging and flowed. The characters came to life for me, and I became attached to them. Simon Vance is a wonderful narrator.

I want to listen to more of Gail Tsukiyama's books.

Andrew Yancy - late of the Miami Police and soon-to-be-late of the Monroe County sheriff’s office - has a human arm in his freezer. There’s a logical (Hiaasenian) explanation for that, but not for how and why it parted from its shadowy owner. Yancy thinks the boating-accident/shark-luncheon explanation is full of holes, and if he can prove murder, the sheriff might rescue him from his grisly Health Inspector gig (it’s not called the roach patrol for nothing). But first - this being Hiaasen country - Yancy must negotiate an obstacle course of wildly unpredictable events with a crew of even more wildly unpredictable characters.

I was so looking forward to listening to this book. Although this story was not as good as previous Carl Hiaasen books, it was good enough. Unfortunately, the performance was not well done which weakened the entire experience. I hope the author and publisher goes back to George Wilson or another previous narrator for future books.

First published in 1970, nine years after Hemingway's death, this is the story of an artist and adventurer, a man much like Hemingway himself. Beginning in the 1930s, Islands in the Stream follows the fortunes of Thomas Hudson, from his experiences as a painter on the Gulf Stream island of Bimini through his antisubmarine activities off the coast of Cuba during World War II. Hemingway is at his mature best in this beguiling tale.

What did you love best about Islands in the Stream?

I am so amazed how Bruce Greenwood could change his characterizations and accents for each of the so many characters and so seamlessly. I agree with one reader that I have never heard a narrator do such a wonderful reading! The performance is the best part of this book.

The book is good, but quite sad. I liked the first parts best, but found the WWII section rather drawn out. Overall, if you like Hemmingway, you will like this.

What about Bruce Greenwood’s performance did you like?

    Everything!

In this riveting novel of almost unbearable suspense, three fragile yet determined people become dangerously entangled in a relentlessly escalating crisis. Colonel Behrani, once a wealthy man in Iran, is now a struggling immigrant willing to bet everything he has to restore his family's dignity. Kathy Nicolo is a troubled young woman whose house is all she has left, and who refuses to let her hard-won stability slip away from her. Sheriff Lester Burdon becomes obsessed with helping her fight for justice.

I found this book depressing. I don't need to be brought down by disfunctional characters. The story went nowhere except down and then out of control. What's the point?

Sorry, found the female narrator sing-songy.

Barcelona, 1945: Just after the war, a great world city lies in shadow, nursing its wounds, and a boy named Daniel awakes on his 11th birthday to find that he can no longer remember his mother's face. To console his only child, Daniel's widowed father, an antiquarian book dealer, initiates him into the secret of the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, a library tended by Barcelona's guild of rare-book dealers as a repository for books forgotten by the world, waiting for someone who will care about them again.

I started reading this book, not remembering much of what it was about. I was immediately captivated by the story line, the wonderful descriptions, and characters. What an adventure. It was hard for me to stop listening!

The narrator, Jonathan Davis, was wonderful; and his depictions of the many characters were flawless. I will be looking for more books authored by Carlos Ruiz Zafon and more books narrated by Jonathan Davis.

Chuckie O'Malley, having just been thrown out of Notre Dame, decides to go to the University of Chicago, thought by many of his co-religionists to be a hotbed of atheism and communism. There he finds Rosemarie, his beautiful foster sister who gave him his first kiss. Though Chuckie thinks of himself as dull, Rosemarie knows better and goads him into a career of infinite promise and gratification, to say nothing of fame and glory.

I kept with this book, but found it to be boring and uninteresting. Also, it ends very abruptly which made me think possibly I was missing some of the narrative.

    Not worth the download.

I, too, kept listening, believing there would be something good to come out of this book. I finished it and was amazed how stupid and unbelievable it was!

I got the feeling the author included insignificant and unnecessary matters in the story to make it last longer. I found both Patrick and Doris, the main characters, weird-- They deserve each other.

I didn't find The Fourth Hand funny, but rather boring and a waste of time.

For ten years, Senator Bob Graham served on the Senate Intelligence Committee, where he oversaw the conduct of the CIA and had access to some of the nation's most closely guarded secrets. In this explosive, controversial, and profoundly alarming insider's report, Senator Graham reveals faults in America's national security network severe enough to raise fundamental questions about the competence and honesty of public officials in the CIA, the FBI, and the White House.

This is a very well-written, easily-understood book, and the narrator is excellent. I was surprised to discover that our government and its agencies had 12 occasions to probably stop the 9-11 terrorist attacks. This book is quite an eye-opener, written by Bob Graham who was/is in a position to know what went on.

This is the kind of book I can listen to more than once.
