"Unexciting"
Found this book dull. For me a book comes alive as the author builds credible characters who carry forward the action in a way that grabs and holds one's attention and, sometimes, one's emotion.. In The Motive this just doesn't happen. Narration was fine - did not interpose itself between the book and the listener in a distracting way - but could not rescue the essential tedium of the book.
"Vintage Crais"
This is vintage Crais so if you have enjoyed his earlier books you will enjoy this. Pike is his silent, effective self and the plot is engaging. Excellent narration.
"Outstanding"
" "Faithful Place" is wrenching to a degree that detective fiction rarely achieves."(Laura Miller). Beautifully written, wonderfully intelligent and an extraordinary deconstruction of the ultimately dysfunctional family. The prose is clever and the observation detailed and perceptive. Running throughout is a vein of kindness and acceptance of human nature and the forces that move us. Tana French is absolutely brilliant as she brings us into more intimate contact with the texture and pathos of life in a poor Irish family than anything I have ever read. Tim Gerard Reynolds' narration is masterly and this is very likely a book that makes a better listen than a read.
"Not To Be Missed"
Could not turn this off. One cold winter's night 7-year old Libby's mother and two sisters ae murdered. Her brother is convicted and sentenced to life in prison. Twemty years later Libby begins to look into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, unravelling a complex history woven by a mixed cast of dysfunctional characters. The narration is excellent. As the story is told first by Libby and then by the men and other women involved in the action, male and female narrators provide their voices. It is immensely effective.
"Excellent"
This contribution by Tony Parks is an outstanding listen. The plot is intriguing, the characters human and engaging, and the descriptions of Africa are spell binding. I enjoyed this book from first to last and recommend it to other listeners who are looking for a good thriller. It was hard to put my iPod down.
"Not quite the ticket"
Never quite sure that men authors should make women their central character or vice versa. There are of course exceptional exceptions. The male stalker is much more compelling than Peyton - but none of it quite works. Not enough depth, and none of it helped by the narrator. Just having a woman as a central character is not enough reason to cast a woman as a narrator. The whole topic of stalking, lurking malevolence and violent death is better delivered by a really good male narrator. This woman narrator has a curiously staccato delivery and a rather strained voice that does nothing to enhance the atmosphere or engage the listener.
"Hard to put down!"
I always know if I've found a compelling listen if I start to lose sleep because I don't want to turn my iPod off. This is a superbly crafted story with enough turns and twists and surprises to hold the listener's attention. the characterisation is strong and the pursuit section gripping. If you like Jeffrey Deaver you will certainly like this book.
"Excellent"
Thoroughly enjoyable thriller. First class narration. Recommended.
"BRILLIANT"
One of the best books so far. Deon Meyer writes with insight and compassion. His characters live and suffer. And the narrator is outstanding. More from this author please!
"Stunning"
Clever, horrifying and touching, Stephen Cannell elicits a rollercoaster of emotion in this outstanding book. The narration is excellent and maintains the pace throughout. This was one book I could not put down - finally turned off my iPod at 3.30 am in order to get some sleep. For anyone who enjoys the mystery/thriller genre this is a must!
