It starts with a double homicide. Because of the high profiles of the victims - a politically connected socialite and his glamorous fiancée - the mayor of San Francisco herself demands that a high-ranking detective be put on the case. And so Abe Glitsky is thrust into the controversial investigation.

    Story

Found this book dull. For me a book comes alive as the author builds credible characters who carry forward the action in a way that grabs and holds one's attention and, sometimes, one's emotion.. In The Motive this just doesn't happen. Narration was fine - did not interpose itself between the book and the listener in a distracting way - but could not rescue the essential tedium of the book.

Five years ago, Dru Rayne and her uncle fled from Louisiana to Los Angeles after Hurricane Katrina hit, but now they face a different kind of danger. A neighborhood protection gang savagely beats Dru’s uncle, but Pike witnesses it and offers his own brand of protection. Oddly enough, neither of them seems to want it — and neither do the federal agents mysteriously watching their storefront, men who appear quite willing to let the gang have its way.

This is vintage Crais so if you have enjoyed his earlier books you will enjoy this. Pike is his silent, effective self and the plot is engaging. Excellent narration.

New York Times best-selling author Tana French has won the prestigious Edgar, Barry, Macavity, and Anthony awards. As her third novel featuring the Dublin Murder Squad opens, 19-year-old Frank Mackey is waiting in vain for Rosie, who he’s supposed to run away to London with. But when she doesn’t show, Frank leaves Dublin without her—thinking never to return.

" "Faithful Place" is wrenching to a degree that detective fiction rarely achieves."(Laura Miller). Beautifully written, wonderfully intelligent and an extraordinary deconstruction of the ultimately dysfunctional family. The prose is clever and the observation detailed and perceptive. Running throughout is a vein of kindness and acceptance of human nature and the forces that move us. Tana French is absolutely brilliant as she brings us into more intimate contact with the texture and pathos of life in a poor Irish family than anything I have ever read. Tim Gerard Reynolds' narration is masterly and this is very likely a book that makes a better listen than a read.

Libby Day was seven when her mother and two sisters were murdered in "The Satan Sacrifice of Kinnakee, Kansas". As her family lay dying, little Libby fled their tiny farmhouse into the freezing January snow. She lost some fingers and toes, but she survived, and famously testified that her 15-year-old brother, Ben, was the killer. Twenty-five years later, Ben sits in prison, and troubled Libby lives off the dregs of a trust created by well-wishers who've long forgotten her.

Could not turn this off. One cold winter's night 7-year old Libby's mother and two sisters ae murdered. Her brother is convicted and sentenced to life in prison. Twemty years later Libby begins to look into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, unravelling a complex history woven by a mixed cast of dysfunctional characters. The narration is excellent. As the story is told first by Libby and then by the men and other women involved in the action, male and female narrators provide their voices. It is immensely effective.

Here's the first of best-selling author Tony Park's gripping thrillers to be published in audio by Bolinda."In a luxury private safari lodge in Kruger National Park, Detective Sergeant Tom Furey has just woken to a protection officer's worst nightmare. The VIP in his charge, British government minister, Robert Greeves, has been abducted. Knowing his career is on the line, Furey vows not to stop searching until Greeves is found - dead or alive.

Peyton Shields had always wanted to be a doctor. But a late-night drive home in a heavy snowstorm changes everything. A car coming straight at her drives her off the road and into a frozen pond. In an instant her wonderful life has turned dark. No one believes her claims that the "accident" was deliberate; not even her husband. Without explanation, he has become distant and bitter, calling her paranoid and accusing her of having an affair with a former lover. Yet the terror has only begun.

    Story

Never quite sure that men authors should make women their central character or vice versa. There are of course exceptional exceptions. The male stalker is much more compelling than Peyton - but none of it quite works. Not enough depth, and none of it helped by the narrator. Just having a woman as a central character is not enough reason to cast a woman as a narrator. The whole topic of stalking, lurking malevolence and violent death is better delivered by a really good male narrator. This woman narrator has a curiously staccato delivery and a rather strained voice that does nothing to enhance the atmosphere or engage the listener.

The Bodies Left Behind is an epic cat-and-mouse chase, told nearly in real-time, and is filled with Deaver's patented twists and turns, where nothing is what it seems, and death lingers just around the next curve on a deserted path deep in the midnight forest.

I always know if I've found a compelling listen if I start to lose sleep because I don't want to turn my iPod off. This is a superbly crafted story with enough turns and twists and surprises to hold the listener's attention. the characterisation is strong and the pursuit section gripping. If you like Jeffrey Deaver you will certainly like this book.

A South African antiques dealer is murdered with a single bullet from an M-16 assault rifle. The contents of his safe are missing, and the only clues are a scrap of blank paper and the unusual weapon used: a gun that's generally the choice of mercenaries, not burglars. Now ex-cop Zed van Heerden has seven days to fill in the blanks in this dead man's past - a past that appears only to start in 1983.
