Todd McLaren has become my new favorite Narrator. His vocal frequencies adjust accordingly to each character, situation, mood, energy, and stress of the story. Honestly, he made the story come alive.
I've listened to samples of other Narrators, and I fear Todd might have turned me off from listening to the other books now that I enjoyed this one so much.
I have not, I'm looking for other books and the other Halo book. It was too fun.
Goosebumps. The story is very serious and action packed, but Todd's tones sometimes sent shivers up my spine. A very good performance.
An excellent Sci-Fi book, however don't expect to understand everything unless you've had a visual reference first (eg, play the game or watch Halo: Forward Unto Dawn).
Pretty high up there. This is a D&D fan's fantasy. It just doesn't want to end!
The British accent is one helpful way sure, but anyone can do that. What Roy does is gives every character his/her own personality and voice and keeps it consistent throughout the books. Very enjoyable to listen to.
To be honest, its so massive and huge, i sometimes get lost in the details and names of people. other than that, there were LOTS of Whowo! moments.
This is a HUGE book! almost 37 hours of listening time! so pace yourself and dont listen to it in small bursts because you might end up getting lost. take time and relax and listen to it.
I think its not time WASTED, but well-spent...not so sure.
Less action. I'm sorry, im an action kind of guy and love them in the movies, but there are way too many "ducks" and "rolls" and "flings upside down" moments in the book where im lost and find myself yearning more for story than action.
There are also moments where they go into some details about characters and then WHAM! They're dead. I had a lot of, "why the heck would you talk about them then!?" moments in this audiobook.
Oh man! Todd is a fantastic reader. Honestly just listen to a sample and you'll find out right away for yourself.
Again, not time wasted...but yeah, not the greatest of times. I would listen to it again some day just to try and catch up again during those action sequences.
The reading was awesome! The characters were great. The story, to a degree, was good and enjoyable. Its a good parallel to the game "though not exactly like it", but its fun to anticipate when the next encounter between Master Chief and the Covenant Warrior will clash every time in the story.
The end fight is very anti-climactic.
Most definitely at the top. The story and descriptions were easy to follow, yet are deep and captivating. I am embedded in the story and I could almost feel and smell the surroundings.
I like how each chapter focuses on a single character. I also simply love the eminent feel of doom that is hovering over the horizon. You can almost feel it in your bones that while everyone is busy fighting each other, a much darker force is creeping in and that just makes you eagerly anticipate what will happen next.
Impossible! 33 hours in one sitting is just not possible. I do love listening to it while driving and just get lost in the story while stuck in traffic. I find myself resisting the temptation to listen while working on something just to make sure i dont miss anything in the story. its just THAT powerful.
