  • Life Expectancy

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 30 mins)
    • By Dean Koontz
    • Narrated By John Bedford Lloyd
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Jimmy Tock comes into the world on the very night his grandfather leaves it. As a violent storm rages outside the hospital, Rudy Tock spends long hours walking the corridors between the expectant fathers' waiting room and his dying father's bedside. It's a strange vigil made all the stranger when, at the very height of the storm's fury, Josef Tock suddenly sits up in bed and speaks coherently for the first and last time since his stroke.

Martin says: "New life for Koontz"
    "DK has done WAY better......"

I preface this review by stating I LOVE DK - he has thrilled, frightened, enthralled, and otherwise captivated me with almost every other book he's written. Life Expectancy was a disappointment - a huge yawn. It almost seems that the premise (a pastry chef turned ultimate hero) was chosen to "prove" he (DK) can make even the most banal scenario interesting, but it failed to rise even to that unlikely occasion. DK, how about finishing the Christopher Snow/Fear Nothing trilogy?

  • The Killing Hour

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 49 mins)
    • By Lisa Gardner
    • Narrated By Anna Fields

A serial killer watches and waits. Each time, he takes two victims, preparing the first's body with all the clues the police need to find the second, who is still alive. The clock ticks, and the second one can still be saved. But the police never make it in time. The second one dies. For years, the killer has plagued the city with the same pattern, but the police never pick up on it quickly enough.

Mina Brown says: "Captivating--it hooks you!"
"Grabs you in the first minutes....."

And never quite lets you go. The story is tightly woven, the narrator is great. It was especially interesting to be listening to this book during the first heat wave of the summer here in the Washington DC area:) I'll be sure to check out the author's other offerings.

  • The Count of Monte Cristo: Part I

    • UNABRIDGED (17 hrs and 45 mins)
    • By Alexandre Dumas
    • Narrated By Fred Williams

    Andrea says: "Amazing Story."
"One of the best stories of all time"

I've been a reader of an abridged version of this tale since I was a kid in 7th grade. Probably read it 25 times. Then last year I got a copy of an unabridged version - holy cow!!! I had no idea what I was missing - incomparable depth, nuance, and detail so richly rendered! It's far and away my all time favorite book, so when I learned Audible had an unabridged version I snapped it up. At first I was somewhat put off by the narrator - the reading seemed somewhat dry. But as I got more involved I grew to really enjoy his rendition. It seems to fit the period writing style perfectly. And the story itself is a classic - never boring, and although at times Dumas stretches out what could be related in a much more concise way, I inwardly smile when I recall that he was paid by the word:)) Just awesome - I never tire of this novel.
