"Brilliant, classic, timely, characters to love"
I hesitated to get this one because it was written in 1959...feared it might be dated, etc. NOT SO! It is amazingly timely and unlike many post-apocyliptic novels it leaves you with a feeling of hope and the desire to do all you can to save our planet and civilization at its best. Hauntingly beautiful descriptions and perfect plot design; I hated to stop the audio and finished it in one weekend. All Americans should know this novel!
"Amazing thriller with lovable warrior protagonist!"
Stumbled on this one by lucky accident and now I'm hooked for the whole series. Wonderfully researched, terrific pacing with original chapter structures and very scary evil bad guys (and girls!). I fell in love with Joe Ledger but the carefully constructed and extremely convincing terrorist plot was full of SF level bioscience and medical doomsday scenario....much better than I had expected it would be. My expectations were not high..just wanted a Zombie apocalyptic thriller to take me through cleaning out the garage and I was delighted at how good the novel was. Highly recommend and thank you Jonathan Maberry as I order #2 in the series!
"Terrific novel of the heart and mind!"
I purchased this not expecting much but was blown away by the quality of the writing and the richness of plot, characters and theme. Medicine, science, romance, suspense and beautifully painted characters...a total winner! I will go on to get all of Ann Patchett!
"Classic SF and Kim Stanley Robinson fantastic!"
For hard core SF fans really- great detective story..terraforming...AI ...problems with the help..ha..ha..extraordinary characters and political intrigue...great love story too..get it!
"Superb sequel to The Passage"
Fantastic...fulfills the promise of the first novel and the writing is excellent. Cronin is a master of narrative construction and each character is so compelling...even the vampiric monsters are uniquely horrific. I HATED to complete the book because nothing else in my library is anywhere near as good. Thank you Mr. Cronin and get number three done!
"Perfection...great writing fantastic characters!"
Justin Cronin is amazing and every bit as good as Stephen King if not better! I couldn't stop listening and fell in love with the characters who are fighting to survive a vampire viral apocalypse in the near future. This is a suspenseful novel but rarely do you find this quality of literary fiction in this genre. Write MORE Justin Cronin ...we await your next installment! Amy must prevail!
"Be still my heart...delightful!"
Full disclosure...I've been a besotted fan of Frank Langella forever and to hear him read this honest and extraordinary memoir in his own voice was heavenly! He shows great courage in revealing exactly how he feels about the great actors he's worked with...much of this is surprising and even shocking at times although it must be said that he is just as hard on himself! His recollections of Jack and Jackie Kennedy, Mel Brooks, Rita Hayworth, Elizabeth Taylor and so many others are amazing! We share having grown up in Bayonne, New Jersey and to think that he was able to rise above his humble beginnings to become the great actor makes this a truly fascinating bildungsroman!
"Perfection of novel and performance...go Claire!"
Atwood is a master and The Handmaid's Tale is a masterwork. I teach it every year in my AP Lit class and in IB English and it never disappoints and now I love having the audio available to play clips and engage the students who won't read conventionally. Thank you Audible for this wonderful production of a dystopian classic!
"Know when to hold and when to fold Mr. Knight!"
I enjoyed the earlier books in the Vampire Earth series and got this one just to see what happens to Valentine and Blake...not much! Seems Knight is just trying to keep the series in play rather than creating a new and engaging novel. Each installment has gotten weaker in every area- plot, theme, characterization, writing.. Too bad because I do love the characters who were developed beautifully in the first few books. I'm done now until he get to the final chapter and then I would consider listening if the reviews are excellent.
Authors have to know when to "hold 'em and when to fold 'em"
"Excellent and engaging expose of a horrid cult"
I used to live near Lakewood NJ and watched the Hasidic women dragging their endless broods of insulated children around the grocery store but never realized just how badly they were treated in the name of "faith" - what a nightmare. The oppression of women in this cult reminded me of the renegade Mormon cults in Texas and Utah; hard to believe this kind of crap still exists in 2012...but lo and beyond...these kinds of cults abound and they ALL forbid birth control so they can populate the country with their particular brand of CRAZY! Well God Bless Deborah Feldman for her courage in breaking away and revealing the truth about the cult she was raised in and let's hope they don't try to hurt her physically. Thank you Deborah Feldman and may your book encourage other women to break away and be FREE!
"Extremely slow...nothing new here..average at best"
Matthew Poirette's review is the most accurate I've read on this slow, overly long and frequently boring novel which begins with an extremely exciting event and then NOTHING MUCH HAPPENS and the characters are not engaging either. I listened all the way until the end figuring the good reviews couldn't ALL be this off....and yet...they are. The subtitle Day 1 should have tipped me off. To compare this author with George Martin is totally ridiculous...they just are not in the same league at all. Don't get the fuss over Rothfuss at all!
