THIS BOOK STARTS OUT AS AN INTERESTING STORY BUT SOON DEVELOPS INTO A FAR-FETCHED,ARTIFICIAL AND OVERLY CONTRIVED PLOT.I GAVE UP ON THIS ONE BEFORE COMPLETING THE FIRST HALF.

One of the most popular suspense novels of all time. A well-dressed man stalks the high-class neighborhoods of New York City. He is armed with an ice axe. His victims are strangers. And one cop, Captain Ed Delaney must solve a series of bizarre, gruesome murders that defy logic or method. This shocking story has captured the imaginations of millions like no other modern thriller.

SET IN THE LATE 1880ies THIS THRILLING NOVEL IS PRESENTED BY THE AUTHOR IN A SLIGHTLY OLD-FASHIONED BUT VERY PLEASING STYLE CHARACTERÍZED BY THE CONSPICUOS ABSENCE OF THE FOUR-LETTER WORDS SO ABUNDANT IN MODERN AMERICAN PROSE. I VERY MUCH ENJOYED LISTENING TO THIS BOOK AND THE FINE RENDITION BY MR ACKROYD.

WHEN READING THE ENTHUSIASTIC REVIEWS OF THIS BOOK AND ITS AUTHOR I HAD HOPED TO HAVE FOUND A NEW SOURCE OF INTERESTING AUDIO BOOKS. NO SUCH LUCK!
A SUBSTANTIAL PART OF WHAT I HAVE HEARD - I FINALLY GAVE UP AFTER NEARLY TWO HOURS OF BOREDOM - CONSISTS OF SILLY LONGWINDED DESCRIPTIONS OF HOW THE ARTIFICIAL PROTAGONISTS LOOK AND WHAT THEY WEAR,SUPPLEMENTED BY TIRESOME RUMINATIONS OF THE FEMALE PARICIPANTS IN THIS CHARADE ON THE MISFORTUNES AND MISTAKES IN THEIR DRAB LIVES. YUCCHH!!

WHILE THE PLOT CREATED BY GILLIAN FLYNN IS SUITED TO KEEP THE LISTENER SPELLBOUND,I WAS IRRITATED BY THE ABUNDANCE OF OFFENSIVE LANGUAGE.THUS,IN SPITE OF THE FINE STORY AND PERFORMANCE ,I COULD AWARD ONLY THREE STARS OVERALL.

IF THE AUTHOR HAD DELETED THE FOUR-LETTER WORDS AS WELL AS THE EXCESSIVELY GRAPHIC DESCRIPTION OF GORY DETAILS,THIS WOULD BE AN IMPROVEMENT.
