Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, The Shipping News shows why E. Annie Proulx is recognized as a gifted and original writer. When Quoyle, a 36-year-old, third rate newspaperman, learns that his two-timing wife has abandoned him and their two daughters, he returns to his ancestral home on the Newfoundland coast, to rebuild his life. We also recommend Proulx's, Accordion Crimes.

My 1st Annie Proulx novel, but certainly not my last. I chose the abridged version because I liked Robert Joy's voice. He seemed more Quoyle-like to me. Read the book, listened to the audio version and watched the movie. Time well spent.

Life's a bit of a beach these days for Ginger Walsh, who's single at 41 and living back home in the family FROG (Finished Room Over Garage). Geri, her BlackBerry-obsessed sister, is also nearly off the deep end, about her pending 50th birthday (and might just drag Ginger with her). Toss in a dumpster-picking father, a Kama Sutra T-shirt-wearing mother, a movie crew come to town with a very cute gaffer, an on-again, off-again glassblower boyfriend, plus a couple of Red Hat realtors, and hilarity ensues.

Probably my least favorite listen of all time. Poor writing and narration. Very annoying. I may give this author another chance, but not for a while.

The year is 1946, and all over the world, young women are crossing the seas in the thousands en route to the men they married in wartime. In Australia, four women join 650 other brides on a voyage to England, aboard the HMS Victoria, which also carries 1,000 naval officers and men. Rules of honour, duty, and separation are strictly enforced, from the captain down to the lowliest young stoker. But the men and the brides will find their lives intertwined in ways the Navy could never have imagined.

I love British fiction and usually go for the 1800's era. Ship of Brides is post-WWII. I've been acquainted with War Brides from New Zealand and Germany so I enjoyed JoJo Moye's description of the Australian version. The romance was intriguing, but Moyes also did a great job of developing her characters, young and old, male and female. I'll read and listen to more from this author. I will also try to find more audiobooks featuring Nicolette McKenzie. Her narration was outstanding.

With the trademark wisdom, humor, and honesty that made Anne Lamott's book on faith, Traveling Mercies, a runaway best seller, Plan B: Further Thoughts on Faith is a spiritual antidote to anxiety and despair in increasingly fraught times.

I ordered this book because a friend suggested it for our book club. My husband and I were unable to listen to it. I found the material foul and sacrilegious. There are far too few things in life which are held sacred, and this author went too far. I listened for 30 minutes, but when she discussed prayer and something offensive in the same breath I quit listening. I sincerely regret this purchase.

In a voice both haunting and startlingly immediate, Nitta Sayuri describes her life as a geisha. Taken from her home at the age of nine, she is sold into slavery to a renowned geisha house. Witness her transformation as you enter a world where appearances are paramount, virginity is auctioned to the highest bidder, women beguile powerful men, and love is scorned as illusion.

Was reluctant to read at first, feared that the symbolism would be too difficult to follow. Not the case. Very easy to recognize Christian principles of forgiveness and redemption. Highly recommend.

Holidays on Ice collects six of David Sedaris' most profound Christmas stories into one slender volume perfect for use as a last minute coaster or ice scraper. This drinking man's companion can be enjoyed by the warmth of a raging fire, the glow of a brilliantly decorated tree, or even in the back seat of a van or police car.

Looking for some light holiday humor? This isn't it. Since when do we find humor in the sexual abuse and murder of children?
