The fourth edition of Basic Economics is both expanded and updated. A new chapter on the history of economics itself has been added, and the implications of that history examined. Among other additions throughout the book, a new section on the special role of corporations in the economy has been added to the chapter on government and big business.

    Story

Since the introduction of dietary guidelines calling for reduced fat intake in the 1970s, a strange phenomenon has occurred: Americans have steadily, inexorably become heavier, less healthy, and more prone to diabetes than ever before. After putting more than two thousand of his at-risk patients on a wheat-free regimen and seeing extraordinary results, cardiologist William Davis has come to the disturbing conclusion that it is not fat, not sugar, not our sedentary lifestyle that is causing America’s obesity epidemic—it is wheat.

Jim "The Impatient" says: "Raw vegetables, eggs, meat and cheese"

The fact that this knowledge will improve my health & prolong my life.

Which character – as performed by Tom Weiner – was your favorite?

    Slow Carbohydrates.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes, when the tall wheat stalks fell over and died.

Good and bad; Wheat really feeds the world but in such a way that it causes, in the end, diabetes, heart disease and fat, fat, fat.
