1666: The monastery at Andrechs has long been a pilgrimage destination, but when the hangman's daughter, Magdalena; her doctor husband, Simon; and their two small children arrive there, they learn that the monks have far larger concerns than saying Mass and receiving alms. It seems that once again the hangman's family has fallen into a mysterious and dangerous adventure. Two monks at the monastery experiment with cutting-edge technology, including a method of deflecting the lightning that has previously set the monastery ablaze.

I enjoyed the setting, the plot, and the scientific knowledge known in that era, but I thought the narrator was a bad choice for this particular book. He sounded to me like he should be reading a hardboiled modern detective story. I thought it was the wrong tone for the book. It made it very difficult to stay immersed in that time period.

Or is it a darker force, a curse upon the land? Amid golden cornfields, FBI Special Agent Pendergast discovers evil in the blood of America's heart.

These two authors have created my favorite mystery series and, as usual, this one is outstanding. Scott Brick narrated this book beautifully. I don't always like his narrations. His talent doesn't match with the book he is reading. He can be melodramatic and it is annoying. But he is perfect for these authors. Thanks again guys for another totally absorbing read.

Victoria McQueen has an uncanny knack for finding things: a misplaced bracelet, a missing photograph, answers to unanswerable questions. When she rides her bicycle over the rickety old covered bridge in the woods near her house, she always emerges in the places she needs to be. Vic doesn't tell anyone about her unusual ability, because she knows no one will believe her. She has trouble understanding it herself.

Yes, I know who this guy is and that makes it a little more difficult to picture him without the shadow behind him. I give him A+ for imagination and that is most impt tool for an author. I thought the book was too long. It sagged in the middle. Needed more editing. And I HATED the narrator and yes, I know who she is. When you quit listening to the story and start thinking about how you don't like the narrator, something is dreadfully wrong. I found her voice grating, intrusive and too melodramatic. All that said, I will continue to read Joe Hill.

Just found this author in one of Audible's sales. One of his characters reminds me of Reacher, just not so far out there. The other main character is partnered with him in a police dept in a small town on the Jersey shore. Good story, good characters and a fun book for a mystery!

This book is about loneliness which is a large part of life. It takes a particular time in the two characters lives and describes how they got there and hopefully going towards a better period in their lives. I think the author did a beautiful job explaining how loneliness is an integral part of living. The book ended on a positive note. I did not find it depressing. Loved the narration.

Their only criteria was oceanfront and isolation, their only desire to strengthen their far-flung friendships. They called themselves the Girls of August. But when one of the Girls dies tragically, the group slowly drifts apart and their vacations together are brought to a halt. Years later, a new marriage reunites them and they decide to come together once again on a remote barrier island off the South Carolina coast. I came across Ms. Siddons many years ago and loved her work from the the first chapter I read. I have all of her books and read them all at least twice. I grew up in Mountain Brook,Al., a suburb of Birmingham. Her voice is so familiar to me. She truly evokes the voice of the South that I connect with. I really enjoyed this book. She gave me insight into several characters. I hope she will give us another book. I know time is catching up with her and writing is a very difficult process, but I can hope!

Also, so many of her books are abridged in Audible. Wish Audible would see if any unabridged copies of these books are out there.

Have read this author for years but this one is the best yet, I think this is some of the most realistic information regarding the horrors that occurred in 1960's in regards to integration. I am from the south and am 73 years old so I remember. Fortunately I lived in Missouri during those years. I hope younger people learn something when reading this. IT IS All True and just the tip of the iceberg. And Mr. Iles, you better be working on next one RIGHT NOW!!!

From the creator, writer, and executive producer of the HBO series True Detective and soon to be a major motion picture comes a dark and visceral novel set along the wastelands of Galveston. On the same day Roy Cady is diagnosed with a terminal illness, he learns that his employer has put a hit out on him. After narrowly escaping an attempt on his life, Cady goes on the run with a young prostitute named Rocky and her three-year-old sister, from New Orleans to Galveston, Texas. Have been having a mediocre run of luck choosing audible books the past two months. And then I bought Galveston. Loved everything about it. This book could be used as good example of terrific writing vs mediocre. Usually find book noir boring, but not this time. Also had no idea he wrote True Detective for HBO. It is the only show I have liked this whole season (sept-feb). This guy is fantastic!!! I checked to see what other books the narrator, Mr Kramer has done and could only find two and they were in a genre I don't like. He is memorizing.
