If you want a thriller. with some depth to it, then Dennis Lehane is your man. Charactors are 3 dimentional, plots are interesting and the narrator is perfect. And if you like this author, try Tana French.
This book has mystery, suspense, great plot, and characters that are sure to become your friends on pages (that is what I call them). Love this author.
Have been having a mediocre run of luck choosing audible books the past two months. And then I bought Galveston. Loved everything about it. This book could be used as good example of terrific writing vs mediocre. Usually find book noir boring, but not this time. Also had no idea he wrote True Detective for HBO. It is the only show I have liked this whole season (sept-feb). This guy is fantastic!!! I checked to see what other books the narrator, Mr Kramer has done and could only find two and they were in a genre I don't like. He is memorizing.
I bought this book because it showed up on Daily Deal. I have looked at its description many times in the past, but it didn't give me a clue as to what it is really about. One of the best books I have read in last 10 yes. Philosophy has never been presented in a more palative form!
I am from the deep south and our home had several black employees. I came to truly love or understand that they were just like me under the skin: a person. This book gives you a real feeling of how the slaves and owners lived. Beautifully written but right in your face. No sugar-coating. And I would like to remind you that it all came down to money, free labor.
Zelda and Scott lived.in a society newly created - the Jazz Age. It is hard for us now to understand how fast and furious the Victorian Age dissolved and its mores were shoved aside. They knew everyone in the literary world worth knowing and we get to have a glimpse of them. In addition, this is the story of a marriage, and some interesting facts about concepts of mental health at thar time. I would like to add that I thought the narrator was outstanding. Will look for her reading other books.
Another great one from Ms. Flagg. She introduces another section of USA, gives you interesting information about WWII and flying and, of course, great characters. Never let's me down!
I read this book when it came out and gave it high marks, not so much for the story as for King's handling of the characters. There is no one better than King when kids' actions and dialog are being depicted .BUT, Steven Weber, as narrator, blew me away. Perfect pace and tone of voice for whatever level story needed at any given point. He actually scared me! I will be looking for other.books narrated by him.
This is my favorite Koontz book. Have read it twice over the years and now have listened to Audible version. It has wide appeal. There is a human love story and loving relationship between a dog and a man and a woman. It has a touch of sci-fi, and is definitely a thriller! How can you miss if you buy this book?!
There are too few books on the history of early pioneer life in many areas of the United States. Florida is one of those areas. This book is a real gem. Great descriptions of daily life, geographical surroundings and the commercial development of the state. I loved every word! And George Guidall is the absolute best narrator. I don't even hear him, I just see, in my mind, the pictures he is painting with the words. Have one negative thing to say, ''what do you read after finishing a 5+ book''?!
I enjoyed the setting, the plot, and the scientific knowledge known in that era, but I thought the narrator was a bad choice for this particular book. He sounded to me like he should be reading a hardboiled modern detective story. I thought it was the wrong tone for the book. It made it very difficult to stay immersed in that time period.
