The year is 1570, and in the convent of Santa Caterina, in the Italian city of Ferrara, noblewomen find space to pursue their lives under God's protection. But any community, however smoothly run, suffers tremors when it takes in someone by force. And the arrival of Santa Caterina's new novice sets in motion a chain of events that will shake the convent to its core.

    "Great Book"
    Overall

This is a wonderful story that says a lot about the relationships between women. The historical background, in the book, is an added bonus. All the characters are well developed by the author. I felt as though I knew each one intimately by the book's end. Anyone interested in the history of women, cloistered nuns and who enjoys a love story that takes place on many levels will enjoy this book.

Raised in the historic southern splendor of Natchez, Mississippi, Penn Cage learned all he knows of honor and duty from his father, Dr. Tom Cage. But now the beloved family doctor has been accused of murdering Viola Turner, the African-American nurse with whom he worked in the dark days of the 1960s. Penn is determined to save his father, but Tom, stubbornly invoking doctor-patient privilege, refuses to even speak in his own defense.

What did you love best about Natchez Burning?

    David Ledoux's reading.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

I kept hoping the bad guys would get caught before they got anymore sadistic.

    Which scene was your favorite?

Dr. Cage talking about his old man pants.

    Any additional comments?

This book wasn't as creepy as some of Greg Iles books (or maybe I'm inured to that now). I was a bit shocked at the ending. It leaves you hanging and believing another book is coming to finish the story.

The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

    The boring first 50 pages

What does David Pittu bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His performance was excellent. I could never have stuck with this book if I was reading it.

Did The Goldfinch inspire you to do anything?

I looked up the painting & it's story.

    Any additional comments?

I thought this book would appeal to an older teen (16 - 18).
I liked the background story about furniture restoration and the double dealing that goes on in the antiquities markets. If it hadn't been for that I might have quit listening. I kept wanting to tell Theo "enough already".

John Waters is a husband and father happy with his lot in life, though he has not always felt that way. Years earlier he escaped an obsessive love affair, which he feared might consume him. The woman in question disappeared after Waters married, and later he heard that she was killed in New Orleans. But now, Waters has an uneasy feeling that she has resurfaced to trouble him - and entice him - once again.

What did you love best about Sleep No More?

I'm a big Greg Iles & Dick Hill fan. I loved that I was able to escape the real world for a few hours.

Would you recommend Sleep No More to your friends? Why or why not?

I would recommend this book to my friends that read mystery thriller fiction.

Have you listened to any of Dick Hill’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I am constantly amazed at the range of voices Dick Hill uses. I actually visualize the characters when he changes voices. I never feel as though Mr. Hill is just reading the book. He puts a lot of effort into his performances.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I will always think about this book when I see a woman [or girl] twisting her hair around a finger. Is she fighting the other woman within her?

    Any additional comments?

The premise of this book is quite creepy. There were points in the book I felt nauseous and had to stop listening for awhile! The fact I couldn't stop listening or thinking about the book, brought me back to listening to the end. I wouldn't say this was a great book but it certainly allowed escape from reality for a few hours.

  • 11-22-63: A Novel

On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. What if you could change it back? In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King - who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer - takes listeners on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.

Would you try another book from Stephen King and/or Craig Wasson?

    No

Has 11-22-63 turned you off from other books in this genre?

    Yes

What does Craig Wasson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

    Tears of emotional description

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I guess if you want to read, something truly fictional, about someone trying to prevent the Kennedy assassination and the consequences of that action, it is an interesting thought.

    Any additional comments?

This book could have told the story in half the length. If you like a lot of detail of the day to day living of the characters, plus a description of their clothing, what they ate, read and felt every moment, then this is the book for you.
