    They have been romanticized and glorified in the movies and TV, but these are perhaps more accurate portrayals of Wyatt Earp and his contemporaries. Published in 1923, Fredrick R. Beckholdt bases most of these stories upon research and interviews with old timers who witnessed many events portrayed here. Becholdt's portrayal of of the outlaws, hostile Indians, cowboys, gamblers, cold blooded killers, prospectors, and lawmen who inhabited the Wild West is riveting.

    What would have made When the West Was Young better?

    The wording was flowery and hard to follow. It could have been because of the reader was so bad. Hard to tell.


    Would you be willing to try another book from Fredrick R. Becholdt? Why or why not?

    No. I think I'll look for additionol stories that have not been told a thousand times before. In addition, some of the facts stated in this book have already been disproved.


    Who would you have cast as narrator instead of John Michaels?

    A six year old could have presented more inflection is his voice to emphasize and convey some of the exciting parts of the book. Maybe a slight pause when you reach a period at the end of a sentence would help.

    When a soldier leaves for war, those left behind often wonder what their loved ones are experiencing. Letters home are always cheerful and vague - no sense in worrying the family. Then upon returning home, these young soldiers do not want to talk about their experiences. Family and friends allege they are now distant, changed, and not the same person they remember from several months earlier. What causes this? Although the backdrop for this novel is the Vietnam War, "cherries" exist in every war.

    This book was like a comic book from the 60s. The dialog was not realistic and it's obvious the author did not serve in a rifle company in any conflict zone.

    The frontiersmen were a remarkable breed of men. They were often rough and illiterate, sometimes brutal and vicious, often seeking an escape in the wilderness of mid-America from crimes committed back east. In the beautiful but deadly country which would one day come to be known as West Virginia, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, more often than not they left their bones to bleach beside forest paths or on the banks of the Ohio River.

    Don't know.
