Shocking his stodgy colleagues at the exclusive Reform Club, enigmatic Englishman Phileas Fogg wagers his fortune, undertaking an extraordinary and daring enterprise to circumnavigate the globe in 80 days. With his French valet Passepartout in tow, Verne's hero traverses the far reaches of the earth, all the while tracked by the intrepid Detective Fix, a bounty hunter certain he is on the trail of a notorious bank robber.

I've listened to this book twice in the last two years, first from a library copy and then I purchased it myself because it was so enjoyable. Jim Dale really makes the story come alive.

In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October, 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world.

The story of Ernest Shackleton's ill-fated voyage to Antarctica, Endurance is both the name of his ship and a fitting title to the amazing struggle the crew faced. Before listening to this fascinating book, I only knew the barest of facts about Shackleton. The book was written in the 1950's but tells the story in amazing detail, pieced together from the various crew members' diaries. And the narrator of the version I listened to, Simon Prebble, was a great asset to the story as well, using different voices for the each crew member's diary contributions. Highly recommend this one.

Full of hilarious tales of his boss Siegfried Farnon, his student brother Tristan, the joys of spring lambing, a cat called Boris and James' jinxed courtship of the lovely Helen, this volume of memoirs is sure to delight old and new James Herriot fans.

I've read and loved all the Herriot books since I was a kid, so when I saw this one I bought it quickly, thinking it contained some previously unpublished stories. I haven't finished the entire book yet but so far it's been entirely a rehash of the same stories from the original books. A few from one, a few from another, etc. Disappointing.

Why we think it’s a great listen: An all-time Audible favorite that mixes historic fiction, adventure, and romance with one of the most fascinating literary devices: time travel. Outlander introduces an exhilarating world of heroism and breathtaking thrills as one woman is torn between past and present, passion and love. In 1945, former combat nurse Claire Randall returns from World War II and joins her husband for a second honeymoon. But their blissful reunion is shattered....

    "better in print!"
    Overall

I'd read this series of books in print years ago and love them. Many people have raved about the narrator so I tried it. She's not bad, just not what I would expect Claire to sound like. But my real problem with it is just hearing all the graphic love scenes read out loud - I prefer to read it and just skim those!

  • Nicholas Nickleby

The most gorgeously theatrical of all Dickens's novels, Nicholas Nickleby follows the delightful adventures of a hearty young hero in 19th-century England. Nicholas, a gentleman's son fallen upon hard times, must set out to make his way in the world. His journey is accompanied by some of the most swaggering scoundrels and unforgettable eccentrics in Dickens's pantheon.

    Robert says: "A knockout!"
    "Fantastic narrator for Dickens"
    Overall

I was somewhat hesitant to try a Dickens novel after being forced to read one in high school. I'm so glad I bought this one. The story is highly entertaining and the narrator does a fabulous job of all the different characters' voices. Don't be put off by the initial gloominess of the story; it picks up quickly.
