The first Hispanic and third woman appointed to the United States Supreme Court, Sonia Sotomayor has become an instant American icon. Now, with a candor and intimacy never undertaken by a sitting Justice, she recounts her life from a Bronx housing project to the federal bench, a journey that offers an inspiring testament to her own extraordinary determination and the power of believing in oneself.

Mrs. Pearle G. Mintz says: "A book so wonderful I can't wait until I share it"

Would you listen to My Beloved World again? Why?

Absolutely. This is a compelling listen. Sonia Sotomayor tells her story with such honesty and candor.

What was one of the most memorable moments of My Beloved World?

When Sonia Sotomayor described her initial lengthy stay in the hospital (after her diagnosis of diabetes) and it culminated in her outburst into tears, at which moment, her usually occupied-with-work mother deftly intervenes with a definitive and commanding "Alright, that's enough!" to the hospital staff. I saw that moment as pivotal. It told me, "Yes, my mother is here for me and yes, she loves me."

What about Rita Moreno’s performance did you like?

I liked the quality of her voice and her diction. I liked that she didn't overemphasize the Spanish words with a heavy Latin accent. She pronounced each word, English and Spanish, with equal precision, authenticity, and clarity.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me laugh and cry, but most notably, it made me feel warm inside and it made me feel connected to the author; so in that way, I found it to be tremendously inspiring. I am taking the inspiration that no matter the circumstances into which you are born, you can climb out of it. Yes, it's possible!

    Any additional comments?

I loved that Sonia Sotomayor opened the book with her own voice! That was a like icing on a cake.

  • Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking

At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking, reading to partying; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over brainstorming in teams. Although they are often labeled "quiet," it is to introverts that we owe many of the great contributions to society--from van Gogh’s sunflowers to the invention of the personal computer.

Would you consider the audio edition of Quiet to be better than the print version?

Yes. It is the conversational style of the language used that makes this audio edition so appealing and effective. It was like having a meaningful and purposeful conversation with a respected and collegial friend.

What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?

The research and documentation that was done to support the claims presented, particularly strong was the personal encounters, e.g. actually attending a Tony Robbins seminar, one-on-one interviews with real time students at HBS, etc.

Have you listened to any of Kathe Mazur’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    No, I have not.

What’s the most interesting tidbit you’ve picked up from this book?

That there exists and Asian-dominated city in California that boasts SAT scores of 20% higher than the national average.

    Any additional comments?

I loved it! I thoroughly enjoyed every spoken word and will be listening to it over and over again.
