Ellie is young, rich, engaged, and in love. In the carefree days before marriage and new responsibility, she decides to house-sit at Aunt Kate's palatial estate in Burton, Virginia. With its nearly invisible housekeepers and plethora of pets, Ellie feels right at home. But when she opens an antique book about the town's aristocracy, she finds disturbing secrets that extend to her own family.

Funny and entertaining with a touch of supernatural. Reminds me more of the books she writes in her Barbara Michaels personna.

Either I am less perceptive than other reviewers or the audio problem previously mentioned has been fixed as I didn't notice any issues at all with audio quality. Great story. I started with Snuff and am now picking up earlier stories of the Night Watch. Just sorry Audible doesn't have Guards! Guards!, which I understand is the first story featuring Sam Vimes and company. I will be listening to this several times.

After listening straight thru the first time, it's the kind of story that you can listen to again and still enjoy Pratchett's wacky satire and characterizations. In fact, it's the kind of story that you can listen to (the second or third time) piecemeal as each isolated bit is highly entertaining. In fact, sometimes I enjoy the bits more the second time around, as the first time, the desire to follow storyline distracts me from the wonderful wordsmithing. So it's ideal to listen to intermittently as you are doing other things around the house, exercising, in the car, or only have a short time to fill. Definitely worth the credit spent.

Sam Vimes is on a well-deserved holiday. But for the commander of the City Watch, a vacation in the country is anything but relaxing. The balls, the teas, the muck - not to mention all that fresh air and birdsong - are more than a bit taxing on a cynical city-born and -bred copper. Yet a policeman will find a crime anywhere if he decides to look hard enough, and it’s not long before a body is discovered, and Sam - out of his jurisdiction, out of his element, and out of bacon sandwiches (thanks to his well-meaning wife) - must rely on his instincts, guile, and street smarts to see justice done.

Kept my interest from start to finish. My only decision now is which of his books to listen to next.
