Orphaned and left to fend for herself in the slums of Averalaan, Jewel Markess - Jay to her friends - meets an unlikely savior in Rath, a man who prowls the ruins of the undercity in search of artifacts and treasure. Nursing Jay back to health is an unusual act for a man who renounced his own family long ago, and the situation becomes stranger still when Jay begins to form a den of other rescued children in Rath’s home. But worse perils lurk beneath the slums....

    Any additional comments?

I became a fan of Michele Sagara by listening to the Chronicles of Elantra Series. Imagine my delight when I discovered another series written by her!

This book is just as descriptive and magical.

Michelle has a special talent for creating worlds that come alive, peopled with characters that wend their way into your life.

Eva's reading of the book is also excellent. Her voice is perfect for 10-year old Jay. My only criticism would be the voice of Aaron, which sounded a bit too forced or fake. But overall, what great job she does with a wide cast of characters.

I'm off to download Book 2!

Richard Mayhew is an unassuming young businessman living in London, with a dull job and a pretty but shrewish fiancée. Then one night he stumbles upon a girl lying on the sidewalk, bleeding. He stops to help her, and his life is changed forever. Soon he finds himself living in a London most people would never have dreamed of: a city of monsters and saints, murderers and angels. It is a world that exists entirely in a subterranean labyrinth of sewer canals and abandoned subway stations.

Where does Neverwhere rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is a fantastic book. Once you've read Neil Gaiman, there's no going back. He is a master at his craft and you will want to read all his books!

What about Neil Gaiman’s performance did you like?

Mr. Gaiman's voice is classic - and having the author read his story to you is always a bonus. The narration is effortless and the story flows smoothly from one nuance to the next.

A storm. Rain-lashed city streets. A flash of lightning. A scruffy lad sees a girl leap desperately from a horse-drawn carriage in a vain attempt to escape her captors. Can the lad stand by and let her be caught again? Of course not, because he's...Dodger. Seventeen-year-old Dodger may be a street urchin, but he gleans a living from London's sewers, and he knows a jewel when he sees one. He's not about to let anything happen to the unknown girl - not even if her fate impacts the most powerful people in England.

What did you love best about Dodger?

Loved the use of contemporary slang. Listened to this book with my 13-year-old son and we both enjoyed it very much. It started a little slowly, but once we got into it, we were hooked!

When the young girl washed up on their shore, no one knew she had been a Vessel. That she had carried a Product. That it had been carved from her belly. Stolen. Claire had had a son. She was supposed to forget him, but that was impossible. When he was taken from their community, she knew she had to follow. And so her journey began. But here in this wind-battered village Claire is welcomed as one of their own. In the security of her new home, she is free and loved. She grows stronger.

What did you like best about this story?

I felt this story was a little weaker than Lois Lowry's previous books, but it was wonderful to be reunited with some old friends, while meeting new ones.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Gaiman’s not just an award-winning author, but a narrator who earns rave reviews – and fields requests from other authors to perform their books, too! Nobody Owens, known to his friends as Bod, is a normal boy. He would be completely normal if he didn't live in a sprawling graveyard, being raised and educated by ghosts, with a solitary guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living nor of the dead....

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This is a GREAT book. Although the beginning is a bit scary for younger kids, the story is captivating, well-written and makes you wish it would never end... thank you Neil Gaiman for the hours of enjoyment I spent with my son, listening to your imagination run wild in perfectly crafted prose.
