This books reads as if it had been written by 3 people who do a poor job at blending the 3 texts. It reads as if one of them was funnyt, one liked making fun of Jews and the other really, really, really like typing.
The book has many funny moments, but many others are not. Someone once told me a great joke: "A Jew goes to an Orthodox Rabi and asks he put a Mezuzah in his Ferrari, the Rabi asks 'what's a Ferrari?' and when he finds out it is a car he refuses, so the guy goes to a reform Rabi and ask him to put the Mezuzah in the Ferrari and the Rabi says: 'what's a Mezuzah?'. In this book the joke includes 3 Rabi, very slow speech from the narrator, very, very long pauses, and they repeat many, many times the whoe thing. They kill the punch line. They really kill the joke. I only use this as an example, of course.
Even though the book is not meant as a Hebrew Language Course, they pronounce many of the Hebrew words wrong, which makes no sense if they are trying to suggest ways to "be more Jewish". They say MezUzah instead of MezuzAh, iOmkeeper istead of iom kippUr, and so forth. That, to me, made the whole book "funny".
At the beginning of the book the volume goes up and down. Then they play music between chapters at what sounds like twice the volume of the one used for speech, so make sure you are ready to turn the volume down on your MP3 or car stereo.
They book could be good, but they need a second edition, a new editor to leave out the stuff that adds nothing to the book and a new director for the audiobook, someone who will take into account the proper pronunciation of foreign words, speech tempo, pausation, and, of course, an engineer who'd monitor the volume lever properly.
Voices can be heard in the background of the audiobook, very distracting, very bad.
The books is great, but the recording production is poor.
Yes, I am serious.
Ok, so, for waterer reasons we are used to seeing "in loving memory of..." at hospitals and museums. We got used to hearing "This program is brought to you by the _____ foundation", and that is fine and all but, THE BIBLE? THIS PEOPLE HAVE ADDED ADVERTISEMENTS TO THE BIBLE?
Sorry, I just could not take it, I deleted it.
This audiobook is recorded with what the producers must have thought was "real life" background noise, and the characters are not talking to microphones, but, to the air.
This has a horrible effect on the recorded voices, and leaves the listener constantly trying to hear what the actors are saying, but, tried as I did, I could not.
Then, there was something else that bothered me, and took me about an hour to figure out what it was.
The narrators are, of course, either reading the script (book) or they have memorized it. There is nothing wrong with this, except that, as a result, due to poor acting, each phrase that comes out of their mouth is a perfect speech, delivered as if they had, well, memorized it. They never doubt, they never falter, their speech never slows down as they think of a work, or use interjections to fill in “thinking time”, they use the most flourished words available to any writer, and they come out their mouths in a way which clearly shows that the words are just lining up one behind the next in their mouth, with no feeling, no sense of creation, it is just dead, learned words coming out one after the other.
guys, trust me. do not buy it. it is random words said once in Hebrew, they in English. there is no method, no repetition, no "connector". just random words.
To me, a spiritual book, is anything that, when I finish reading, leaves me with a lingering thought... we are all one...
After listening to this book I decided to read all his books, so far I have listened to "In a sunburned country", "A walk in the woods", "notes from a small iland" and I am going to get the rest.
Better get abriged version, it was read by professor Bryson, much better narrator. The unaridged version has way too many details.
This is just a very, very sad book wich explains in a step by spet rithm, how to feel the emotional void of your life with money.
Society had, in the las decadeds, a problem, all people did all day was work to try to have as much credit as posible to buy a larger house and car than you can afford.
Now, since we have identified this problem, people do the same, but give 10% to charity and save for their childer's college, and then buy the house with the extra 5 rooms and the porche you cannot aford.
This book tells you how to fill your meaninless life with money, without taking any loans.
It even tells you to go to court houses and ask people if they want to sell you their houses if they need the money, the writer forgot the Intensive Care Unit of a hospital, he could go and sell blood there.
Douglas is one of the very, very, very few people to have not one, but, many original ideas.
His jokes are for the brain what chocolate is for the mouth.
He is just amazing.
God bless him.
