The definitive, personal account of the deadliest season in the history of Everest by the acclaimed journalist and author of Into the Wild. Read by the author. Also, hear a Fresh Air interview with Krakauer conducted shortly after his ordeal.

    "Great adventure--poor narration"

I loved Krakauer's account of his Everest climb, however his choice to narrate his own book falls flat, the performance is boring and delivered in a monotone. It spoiled the audio version for me.

After eight years on the air, Desi Arnaz did not love Lucy any more. On screen, they were dynamite, a comedy pairing more successful than any Hollywood had ever produced. But when the cameras stopped rolling, they fought, screamed and threatened each other more each season. Finally, an argument in Desi's production office turned violent. Lucy hurled a cocktail glass past his head, and Desi demanded a divorce. He moved out that night. After nearly 20 years, America's favorite couple was finished.

I found this book to be like a monologue of VIP names and events surrounding them narrated like a textbook account with little feeling. It was just a timeline of what happened to them in their career with some background, but no real insight, humor or imagination, just the facts like a history book. It could have been interesting, and if it hadn't been for Lucy and Desi's colorful personalities and impressive accomplishments, it would have been a complete waste of time. I really didn't care for the way their story was told in this rendition.

Audie Award, History/Biography, 2016. On the night of July 20, 1969, our world changed forever when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the moon. Based on in-depth interviews with 23 of the 24 moon voyagers, as well as those who struggled to get the program moving, A Man on the Moon conveys every aspect of the Apollo missions with breathtaking immediacy and stunning detail.

It seems I may be one of the few people who didn't like this book and I wonder why. I didn't care for the narration, it seemed stilted to me, overdone in a way with emphasis placed upon things not because of their import or real value, but just to create interest. I found some of the history and accounts interesting, I didn't even remember that there was more than one moon landing! So in that sense it was enlightening. I also thought it was too long.

On 1 August, 2008, 18 climbers from across the world reached the summit of K2, the world's second-highest and most dangerous mountain - a peak that claims the life of one in every four climbers who attempt it. Over the course of 28 hours K2 had exacted a deadly toll: 11 lives were lost in a series of catastrophic accidents.

The story is true and well written from a different perspective, if you read Buried in the Sky which is about the same expedition, this account gives some detail which is revealing. Overall I liked Buried in the Sky better and the author's decision to narrate this book just ruins it. He has a heavy Gaelic accent which is difficult to understand and doesn't go well with the overall feeling of the book. If you are a hardcore mountaineering book reader, this one will probably interest you, otherwise skip it.

From the former secretary of defense, a strikingly candid, vivid account of serving Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. When Robert M. Gates received a call from the White House, he thought he'd long left Washington politics behind: After working for six presidents in both the CIA and the National Security Council, he was happily serving as president of Texas A&M University. But when he was asked to help a nation mired in two wars and to aid the troops doing the fighting, he answered what he felt was the call of duty.

This is a very detailed account of Robert Gates life's work in Washington and gives tremendous insight into the Bush and Obama administrations as well as a unique perspective on the history of the times from his perspective. I really liked having a fresh look at the Bush presidency vs. Obama through his experiences. This book is long and has a lot of detailed accounts which could be very interesting if only they had chosen a different narrator. It is read with little expression in a monotone and just goes on and on like that, compared to some of the other books I've listened to, this would have been a good listen but is just made boring and flat, I couldn't wait to get it over with.

Is there a science to love? In this groundbreaking audiobook, psychiatrist and neuroscientist Amir Levine and psychologist Rachel S. F. Heller reveal how an understanding of attachment theory - the most advanced relationship science in existence today - can help us find and sustain love. Attachment theory forms the basis for many best-selling books on the parent/child relationship, but there has yet to be an accessible guide to what this fascinating science has to tell us about adult romantic relationships - until now.

On January 17, 1913, alone and near starvation, Douglas Mawson, leader of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, was hauling a sledge to get back to base camp - the dogs were gone. Mawson plunged through a snow bridge, dangling over an abyss by the sledge harness. A line of poetry gave him the will to haul himself back to the surface. On February 8, when he staggered back to base, his features unrecognizable, the first teammate to reach him blurted out, "Which one are you?"

If you are a dog lover, don't buy this book, most of it is about how the expedition's dogs were starved, killed and abused throughout the ordeal. I was sickened by the accounts of mother dogs having to give birth under the most horrendous conditions and eating their puppies because they were so hungry. Just horrible and the story was equally morose. I really disliked this book.

There has always been some gap between rich and poor in this country, but in the last few decades what it means to be rich has changed dramatically. Alarmingly, the greatest income gap is not between the 1 percent and the 99 percent, but within the wealthiest 1 percent of our nation-as the merely wealthy are left behind by the rapidly expanding fortunes of the new global super-rich. Forget the 1 percent; Plutocrats proves that it is the wealthiest 0.1 percent who are outpacing the rest of us at break-neck speed.

At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State - and to do it alone. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than “an idea, vague and outlandish and full of promise.” But it was a promise of piecing back together a life that had come undone.

I enjoyed this book, but had hoped for more about the PCT which she hiked alone, mostly it's about her interior life and experiences and how the hike affected that. The narration is OK but the tone didn't really match the subject matter in my opinion. This is a book for chics mostly, don't know if men would relate.

The hidden history of Wall Street and the White House comes down to a single American concept: confidence. Both centers of power, New York and Washington, learned how to manufacture it - until August 2007, when that confidence began to crumble. Ron Suskind here tells the story of what happened next, as Wall Street struggled to save itself while a man with little experience and soaring rhetoric emerged from obscurity to usher in "a new era of responsibility".

This is the best book I have read on the subject of what went on behind the scenes during the first two years of Obama's presidency, what happened with healthcare, the economy and why his popularity flagged. The narration by James Lurie is just superb, I have listened to it four times and always hear something new. It is very informative and entertaining.
