Made me cringe every time he spoke. Contrary to what the byline says--this is not the same narrator as the first book. While the narration in Darkly Dreaming was not great it was at least bearable. The narrator for Dearly Devoted has such a fake cadence and irritating enunciation that it makes me cringe every time I turn it on. I can only manage to listen to it for a few minutes at a time before I have to turn it off. I really wish I hadn't bought the whole series but I just assumed it would be the same narrator as the first book..
What a disappointment to find that after listening to 12 Dresden books, Audible changed the narrator. After 12 books I was used to the way James Marsters brought all the characters to life. The current narrator, John Glover, just doesn't have the range of voices and accents that Mr. Marsters has, so half the time you can't tell who is supposed to be speaking. Is it Dresden? Is it Murphy? Who can tell? I could have gotten used to Dresden sounding like a little old Jewish guy from Brooklyn--because after all, maybe your voice changes when you are on the other side--but I found my mind wandering constantly while listening to this book because so many of the voices ran together for me and became a monotone. It's a good thing they've brought James Marstersback for Book 14 otherwise this would have been my last Dresden book. I think Audible should do the right thing for their listeners and have James Marsters re-record Book 13 so we can listen to it the way it should have been recorded in the first place.
Susan Bennett is the best narrator ever and I wish she would do a lot more books so I could buy them. I tried listening to a Kim Harrison book with another narrator and I just cringed at how awful it was compared to Susan Bennett--I had to turn it off. It was a pleasure listening to the Christopher Moore books thanks to Ms. Bennett's flawless performances.
