Over a span of 12 years (1975 to 1987), New Dimensions Radio host Michael Toms recorded conversations between the late Joseph Campbell (author of The Power of Myth) and himself, during which time they developed a close friendship. In these stimulating conversations, central questions in the search for understanding and knowledge of the spiritual universe in which we live are explored.

    "repetitive and disappointing"
    Overall

I'm a big fan of Campbell and have many of his books. I'm also a fan of Michael Toms and have listened to many of his New Dimensions programs. The first thing that bothered me about this listen was how Toms doesn't seem to realize how he is breathing into the microphone while Campbell is speaking!! He sounds like he's a heavy breather on an obscene phone call!! I managed to get past this somehow but the further I got into the program, I realized that it basically could have been edited down to about an hour and a half. All of the concepts they discuss are REPEATED again and again, sometimes verbatim. Not a complete waste of time but disappointing nonetheless.

We are accustomed to think of sociopaths as violent criminals, but in The Sociopath Next Door, Harvard psychologist Martha Stout reveals that a shocking 4 percent of ordinary people, one in 25, has an often undetected mental disorder, the chief symptom of which is that that person possesses no conscience. He or she has no ability whatsoever to feel shame, guilt, or remorse. One in 25 everyday Americans, therefore, is secretly a sociopath.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This book held my interest the entire way through. It is quite unsettling to realize how some people you encounter in the world really do not care about others feelings or well-being whatsoever! It was particularly timely for me as my husband and I have just gone through two and a half excruciating years dealing with our daughter's love interest, who ended up being a textbook case of sociopathy. (Needless to say, he completely broke her heart) It's amazing how easily, even with all our experience, it's still possible to be taken by one of these con artists. This book helps you to spot them right away. I highly recommend this book as an informative and insightful listen for all!

  • The Lovely Bones

It may be difficult to imagine a life-affirming book which begins with the main character, a 14-year-old girl, recounting her rape and murder, but Alice Sebold's debut novel is just such a book. Having received advance critical acclaim that before now was reserved only for literary giants, this book will no doubt invite comparisons to works such as Tracy Chevalier's The Girl with the Pearl Earring and Toni Morrison's Beloved.

    "Superb storytelling"
    Overall

Every time I entered a bookstore, I was drawn to this book for some reason and felt compelled to read it. Now I know why. I was very excited to see that "Bones" was offered on Audible and thoroughly enjoyed the book from beginning to end. This is a story about relationships and how those relationships are affected by tragedy and loss, how each of us deals with grief on such a personal level and how the tender thread of sorrow is ultimately what connects us all.

Writer John Howard Griffin (1920-1980) decided to perform an experiment in order to learn from the inside out how one race could withstand the second class citizenship imposed on it by another race. Through medication, he dyed his skin dark and left his family and home in Texas to find out.

Carol says: "What a glorious accident to find this book..."
"A lesson in humanity and courage"
    Overall

A touching, poignant story of one man's incredible courage to move outside the realm of the "known" in order to discover the truths of racism and ignorance ingrained into Southern society. Growing up in Kentucky in the 60's, I witnessed many of the tragic and gut-wrenching scenarios described in his journey. A brilliant social experiment that exposes the lies of what some believe is "equality." A reminder to us all to keep ourselves in check when dealing with people of different races, religions and nationalities different from our own.
