I read the story several years ago and then say the movie. Obviously I was disappointed with the movie. Recently saw the movie again and decided to read the book again. What a great book, I love the reader, have listened to him with other books, he is wonderful. I encourage ALL to read or listen to this book.
You wonder as you start how can this happen, how can a family give up a child knowing it has happened before and the outcome. Some how you are drawn in by, "maybe not this time".... yet the curiosity gets you and step by step yout are drawn in. Great story, that's how you get drawn in.
Just decided this sounded better. Surprise was I loved this. Kinda glad I didn't go into the listen with some preknowledge. Made this listen really exciting. Will probably Read "Romeo and Juliet" now just to see if it is as good as Ms Caine did. Mr McCarley was excellent!
In saying that, I mean that this story is amazing, Well written and Very Well read. The personality of the characters, you come to know and love them personally. If you read Diaries of Anne Frank, this is a MUST READ!
It is hard to say what I liked best, I have been reading and learning about the slave trade and this sounded like it might be informational. WOW was it ever, the first hand accounts, the details, the trails, the shear honesty, and the pain. I couldn't stop, few books do I have going until it is done. This just kept pushing me on! I had to know what would happen next. Do I recommend it, YES! Is it painful at times to listen, YES! I felt like the reader was alive in the character. It was long and gruesome at times, I longed for something good to come of her life, well worth every hour spent.
When I started the book didn't realize it was a sequel so it was a pleasent surprise to find it was and what a great book to sequel. The Winter Sea read it twice before I could put it down and thought I have to read this author again, had read The Rose Garden first, so I am sure, you can see a pattern.
What a great story, the twists and turns to get to the knowledge of The Firebird. Ms Kearsley definitely knows her history and when she started talking about St Petersburg well, I have traveled there myself and I felt like I was right back to one of my most favorite places in the world. The depictions was so much like I remember and the things I loved about the city were in the book. It was wonderful! Definitely a MUST READ. Another word would be enthralling, I could barely put it down when I had to.
At first I thought Ms Kellgren was a little cold and matter of fact after reading the other two books. As I finished I warmed up to her, her accents were spot on I thought, but the narrative seemed cold. Just her way I guess, Really enjoyed the book, well worth the read!
I've read it twice since, I bought it. The intrigue is amasing. The details, the idea of sticking to the facts. Makes me wonder after I finished it, what is the truth? So convincing, so well written, you fall into the story, don't want to crawl out, even when it's over, LOVE LOVE LOVED IT!!!!
The reader draws you in and holds you. You feel like you know what's coming next then surprise! Great read (listen) great reader, the end slays you! Love loved loved it!
Don't really know why I bought this book and must say several times wanted to quit listening. But.... curiousity just keep dragging me on, kept hoping for something that never came.
I own the movie but had never read the book. Was looking for some Ralph Cosham books (I love listening to him. This is the 3rd book I've listened to by Mr Cosham, he's wonderful!) on Audible and there was my favorite movie. Was really surprized how much the playwrite took liberties but isn't that always the case. Love FINALLY reading the book!
