  • Star Trek: Spock vs. Q (Adapted)

    • ORIGINAL (54 mins)
    • By Leonard Nimoy
    • Narrated By Leonard Nimoy, John de Lancie

Ambassador Spock travels back in time to subtly warn Earth's inhabitants of impending doom while calling into question humanity's priorities. However, before the truth is told, the all-powerful being, Q, appears and reminds Spock that he is prohibited from interfering in Earth's history. Besides, Q doesn't see mankind as something worth saving.

David says: "Very different Star Trek"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I'd happily recommend this to any other Star Trek fans.

Have you listened to any of Leonard Nimoy and John de Lancie ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is the first time I've heard Leonard Nimoy and John de Lancie's performances on Audible, and I loved it. Their characterisations and deliery were wonderful. There was an underlying serious message within the performance, which was balanced by the inherent enjoyment between both Nimoy, de Lancie and the audience. Five stars!

    Any additional comments?

I've come across references to the 'Alien Voices' series in the past and this recording was my first experience. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and will be tracking some more down in future.

  • The Gate Thief: Mithermages, Book 2

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs)
    • By Orson Scott Card
    • Narrated By Stefan Rudnicki, Emily Rankin
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Here on Earth, Danny North is still in high school, yet he holds in his heart and mind all the stolen outselves of 13 centuries of gatemages. The Families still want to kill him if they can’t control him - and they can’t control him; he is far too powerful. On Westil, Wad is now nearly powerless - he lost everything to Danny in their struggle. Even if he can survive the revenge of his enemies, he must still somehow make peace with the Gatemage Daniel North, for when Danny took that power from Loki, he also took responsibility for the Great Gates.

Benjamin says: "Flashes of Great, Ok, and Bad. Overall: Meh."
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

This is the first time in years that I've given up on a book, but I'm halfway through this one and I just can't do it. The premise is interesting, but there's a lot of extraneous information that doesn't seem relevant to the story. Worse, none of the characters - and I mean none - have any redeeming qualities whatsoever. There's nothing to like about any of them! Even the friends of the main character, Danny North, all come across as being vapid and grasping, so I'm having a hard time getting engaged. The character 'Wad' held my interest for a time, but unfortunately those times were few and far between.

I can appreciate the amount of work that has gone into this book, but alas it's just not for me.

  • Guts: The Endless Follies and Tiny Triumphs of a Giant Disaster

    • UNABRIDGED (4 hrs and 21 mins)
    • By Kristen Johnston
    • Narrated By Kristen Johnston
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

The two-time Emmy Award-winning actress has written her first book, a surprisingly raw and triumphant memoir that is outrageous, moving, sweet, tragic, and heartbreakingly honest. Guts is a true triumph - a memoir that manages to be as frank and revealing as Augusten Burroughs, yet as hilarious and witty as David Sedaris.

John Campbell says: "Whiskey and cigarettes have never sounded so good."
    "One of the best"
Where does Guts rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is hands down one of the best audio books I've listened to so far. Kristen doesn't hold back in her story, which is funny, sad and enlightening all at once. People primarily identify addiction with substance abuse, but her wry definition of it made me laugh. Her reading of her story was a theatrical masterpiece, and I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone. You'll laugh, you'll learn, and if you're like me you'll immediately to go YouTube to watch some of her performances in Third Rock from the Sun.

    Kristen ... MORE PLEASE!

  • Feet of Clay: Discworld, Book 19

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 35 mins)
    • By Terry Pratchett
    • Narrated By Nigel Planer

Who's murdering harmless old men? Who's poisoning the Patrician? As autumn fogs hold Ankh-Morpork in their grip, the City Watch has to track down a murderer who can't be seen. Maybe the golems know something - but the solemn men of clay, who work all day and night and are never any trouble to anyone, have started to commit suicide....

Catherine says: "Great, as usual, but with a glitch"
    "Nigel Planer delivers again."
Would you consider the audio edition of Feet of Clay to be better than the print version?

I've enjoyed the print versions of Pratchett's books for years, but there's something about Nigel Planer's delivery that really brings it all to life.

What about Nigel Planer’s performance did you like?

I've listened to a few recordings by Nigel Planer now, and I really like the way he has assigned specific accents and personality touches to each of the characters. He's continued this from one book to the next, so there's a great audible continuity to his work.
