Mary Mallon was a courageous, headstrong Irish immigrant woman who bravely came to America alone, fought hard to climb up from the lowest rung of the domestic service ladder, and discovered in herself an uncanny, and coveted, talent for cooking. Working in the kitchens of the upper class, she left a trail of disease in her wake, until one enterprising and ruthless "medical engineer" proposed the inconceivable notion of the "asymptomatic carrier" - and from then on Mary Mallon was a hunted woman.

Who knew! Not me. I thought this was a great story, outlining the life of a misunderstood woman in American history. Was it her fault? Was it the doctors? Or the rampant filth that lined the streets of New York? A fascinating look at medical practice in early stages of understanding immunity and the way disease is transmitted. Equally fascinating is the story of Mary as told by Keane. Top rate narration, too!

Few subjects are as compelling-or as endlessly variable-as love and marriage. The Bible is filled with references to husbands and wives, from the story of Adam and Eve to advice in the New Testament, each open to interpretation. In The Meaning of Marriage, Timothy Keller, pastor of New York's Redeemer Presbyterian Church and bestselling author of The Reason for God, uses the scriptures as his guide to show readers what God's call to marriage is, and why this is such a powerful call.

Picture a late-May morning in 1918, a time when Montgomery wore her prettiest spring dress and finest floral perfume - same as I would wear that evening.... Thus begins the story of beautiful, reckless, 17-year-old Zelda Sayre on the day she meets Lieutenant Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald at a country club dance. Fitzgerald isn’t rich or settled; no one knows his people; and he wants, of all things, to be a writer in New York. No matter how wildly in love they may be, Zelda’s father firmly opposes the match....

Jenna Lamia is a wonderful narrator and she was just perfect as Zelda Fitzgerald. The story is fascinating. A beautiful portrait of a misunderstood woman and her fragile marriage to F. Scott Fitzgerald. Jazz age Paris is portrayed in all it's crazy glamour. I think this will appeal to all who give it a listen.

    F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic American novel of the Roaring Twenties is beloved by generations of readers and stands as his crowning work. This new audio edition, authorized by the Fitzgerald estate, is narrated by Oscar-nominated actor Jake Gyllenhaal (Brokeback Mountain). Gyllenhaal's performance is a faithful delivery in the voice of Nick Carraway, the Midwesterner turned New York bond salesman, who rents a small house next door to the mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby....

Winter of the World picks up right where the first book left off, as its five interrelated families - American, German, Russian, English, Welsh - enter a time of enormous social, political, and economic turmoil, beginning with the rise of the Third Reich, through the Spanish Civil War and the great dramas of World War II, up to the explosions of the American and Soviet atomic bombs. As always with Ken Follett, the historical background is brilliantly researched and rendered, the action fast-moving, the characters rich in nuance and emotion.

But check the Guinness Book of World Records, and you'll find that the honor belongs to Agatha Christie, whose 78 mysteries have sold an estimated two billion copies in more than 45 languages, and have added two iconic investigators to our culture: Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple.

Phillippa Gregory did extensive research for her biography of the White Queen, Elizabeth Woodville, a commoner who married a king. She was the granddaughter of the mythical water goddess Mellucinna, and daughter of Jacquetta, lady in waiting to the great Margaret Beaufort. This was a wonderful book, an extensive telling of an obscure but pivotal chapter in English history.

First, let me say that this book takes a bit of perseverance to get in to. Once you're in, there is no turning back. The narration was top notch! The story was great till the last few chapters, which, I say, from a womans point of view, were not totally believable. I'm not a feminist by a long shot, I'm just saying!!! while laughing! I really did love this book, though! And, till the last few chapters, I did think it was written by a woman, so much for my research before buying. Definitely, most definitely worth the time!

Debut novelist Eowyn ivey’s experience living in the Alaskan wilderness brings a palpable authenticity to The Snow Child. Alaska in the 1920s is a difficult place for Jack and Mabel. Drifting apart, the childless couple discover Faina, a young girl living alone in the wilderness. Soon, Jack and Mabel come to love Faina as their own. But when they learn a surprising truth about the girl, their lives change in profound ways.

I thought this was a sweet love story and a beautiful book. The author paints the Alaskan wilderness with the fluidity of a poet. Te narration took a bit to get used to but once I was into the book I thought she captured the essence of the characters perfectly! Great selection.
