The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

B.J. says: "A stunning achievement - for author and narrator"

Would you try another book from Donna Tartt and/or David Pittu?

No. This book was not gripping. It was entirely too long with side stories and excess verbage that should have been edited out.

Would you recommend The Goldfinch to your friends? Why or why not?

No. I think there's a good story here about the Goldfinch painting and a boy. However, the book is so wordy that I kept wishing it would stick to a more concise story. The thought process of the characters and actions they take felt too saccharine. I found it to be written by someone who couldn't relate to any of the events they were constructing in writing the story.

What does David Pittu bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

    Yes, he's good.

Do you think The Goldfinch needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No, the author concludes everything so improbably that why would it.

Though Jack Kerouac began thinking about the novel that was to become On the Road as early as 1947, it was not until three weeks in April 1951 that he wrote the first full draft that was satisfactory to him. Typed out as one long, single-spaced paragraph on eight long sheets of tracing paper that he later taped together to form a 120-foot scroll, this document is among the most significant, celebrated, and provocative artifacts in contemporary American literary history.
