"Great Book, Great Narration"
The story was great and Dick Hill is one of Audible's best narrators
Good, as Always.
"Great for Civil War or Alternate History Fans"
One may agree with or totally hate Newt Gingrich on political issues but is has to be admitted that he is a well informed historian, especially with regard to the Civil War. This novel dramatizes a commonly asked "why" and "what-if" question about Lee's behavior at Gettysburg
and follows up with what might have happened if he had decided differently.
Best if you know something of the Civil War and Gettysburg in particular but OK even if you do not. Well written, well performed, and entertaining. If you are a fan of either Civil War history or alternative history novels and are a liberal, don't let your dislike of Gingrich interfere with enjoying a good book!
I have now listened to the second book in the trilogy (as good if not better) and am starting the third. I also plan to buy the freestanding book about the Battle of the Crater.
"Nice Sequel"
I am not sure exactly why some reviewers are whining that this was not a good book because it was not as good as the first book of the series. Hardly any sequel can ever be as good as the first book (or movie) since the more spectacular concepts are typically introduced in the first of any series.
This was just fine as a sequel and had the same suspense and tone as the first book. Well worth it and I would recommend it highly.
"Another good Deutermann book"
Another winner Deutermann/Dick Hill book. Hill is clearly one of the better narrators out there.
My only wish would be that the female characters were done with female voices. Hill does a decent job with the female voices but even the best narrator is not as good as the "real thing" (male or female). This has always been one of my "peeves" about fiction audio books. I have always felt that most fiction is more performance than narration and therefore needs the appropriate performers, not just a single narrator.
"Nice Start to a Series"
Nice action thriller that never lets up. Unlike all too many audio books, this narration helps the story instead of distracting from it. Looking forward to getting the next book.
"Love Taylor's Books!"
I would have given this 5 stars across the board as I love this series and the author ( a nice fellow, BTW, I have exchanged email with him regarding e-book availability).
Maybe it is just me, but I always find it distracting when a book that contains both male and female characters has only a male or only a female narrator. It tends to take one out of the story and therefore impacts negatively on the book.
For some books (mostly non-fiction) where there are no real characters, it does not matter what the sex of the narrator is, as long as they are good, but for most fiction both a male and a female narrator are needed. I know it costs more and I, for one, would be willing to pay more!
So I may buy the next book in the series in eBook form unless the narration is properly split.
"Nicely done end to series"
The fact that they used a male to do male voices and a female to do female voices made this better than average. I suspect this is not done as often as it should be because it probably costs more.
On the other hand, there is a right way and a wrong way and if doing it right costs more - I will pay more. Much less distracting, more believable and easy to listen to.
The others in the series although I read those in paperback.
"Scary Business"
Scary and real.
For someone with training in biology, it was maybe a bit too simplified but overall it was very good.
"Nicely done and narrated."
Story was good and it was nice to have the author narrate.
The author knows the feel required better than any actor could.
I really wish it had been unabridged.
"Great Book - HORRIBLE narrator!"
It would have been if I could have finished it. This narrator could not do a male voice if she had a sex change. I listened to maybe a half hour before I felt like screaming and quit and then went to BAEN and bought the ebook. I have read all of the series and sincerely wish that they had gotten an male narrator for the male parts. As it is, this was truly awful and I have wasted my money.
Only if she narrated female characters and ONLY female characters.
Yes, go buy the regular ebook version from BAEN as this narration made it unusable and unlistenable.
I have learned to listen to the samples first.
