The fact that they used a male to do male voices and a female to do female voices made this better than average. I suspect this is not done as often as it should be because it probably costs more.
On the other hand, there is a right way and a wrong way and if doing it right costs more - I will pay more. Much less distracting, more believable and easy to listen to.
The others in the series although I read those in paperback.
The narrator was great, his accents were flawless and the performance was good.
OTOH, for me, most of the book came off as a soap opera. Lots of "character development"
and "personal relationships" stuff and only action in the last hour or so of the book. OK if you like that sort of thing, but I personally prefer more action and less "character development".
Character development is necessary, but should not be central and I felt it was overdone in this book.
So I would rate this a buy if you like soap opera or romance but a "don't buy" if you are an action fan.
OK, this is not great literature but that is not what one reads books like this for. What it is, however, is first class military scifi/space opera. Lots of space battles and a great deal of humor, this is even better than book one.
I love the narrator's depictions of the main character as well as the Aliens and the "Halseyesque" Admiral Hornmeyer!
With the Harrington series getting a bit long in the tooth and spoiled by a lousy narrator, it is great to see a related series started with new characters and a lot of future potential. The book was great as was the narration. I look forward to the next installment!
I really liked the story but I had to quit listening. Maybe I will go buy the Kindle book and read it.
The narrator was just awful! It was not really his skills, it was his way of reading wherein he tapers his volume after almost every sentence or paragraph. I found myself constantly straining to understand the last few words to the point where it actually gave me a headache and I just had to stop.
I will not be listening to any more books narrated by John Lee.
One may or may not like Newt Gingrich as a politician but he is a qualified historian and this take on the possible is very well done.
As far as the narrator, William Dufris is, IMHO, Audible's very best narrator. His accents are amazing. I will buy any book he narrates if it is even close to a book that i might like.
One may agree with or totally hate Newt Gingrich on political issues but is has to be admitted that he is a well informed historian, especially with regard to the Civil War. This novel dramatizes a commonly asked "why" and "what-if" question about Lee's behavior at Gettysburg
and follows up with what might have happened if he had decided differently.
Best if you know something of the Civil War and Gettysburg in particular but OK even if you do not. Well written, well performed, and entertaining. If you are a fan of either Civil War history or alternative history novels and are a liberal, don't let your dislike of Gingrich interfere with enjoying a good book!
I have now listened to the second book in the trilogy (as good if not better) and am starting the third. I also plan to buy the freestanding book about the Battle of the Crater.
I am not sure exactly why some reviewers are whining that this was not a good book because it was not as good as the first book of the series. Hardly any sequel can ever be as good as the first book (or movie) since the more spectacular concepts are typically introduced in the first of any series.
This was just fine as a sequel and had the same suspense and tone as the first book. Well worth it and I would recommend it highly.
Another winner Deutermann/Dick Hill book. Hill is clearly one of the better narrators out there.
My only wish would be that the female characters were done with female voices. Hill does a decent job with the female voices but even the best narrator is not as good as the "real thing" (male or female). This has always been one of my "peeves" about fiction audio books. I have always felt that most fiction is more performance than narration and therefore needs the appropriate performers, not just a single narrator.
Nice action thriller that never lets up. Unlike all too many audio books, this narration helps the story instead of distracting from it. Looking forward to getting the next book.
I would have given this 5 stars across the board as I love this series and the author ( a nice fellow, BTW, I have exchanged email with him regarding e-book availability).
Maybe it is just me, but I always find it distracting when a book that contains both male and female characters has only a male or only a female narrator. It tends to take one out of the story and therefore impacts negatively on the book.
For some books (mostly non-fiction) where there are no real characters, it does not matter what the sex of the narrator is, as long as they are good, but for most fiction both a male and a female narrator are needed. I know it costs more and I, for one, would be willing to pay more!
So I may buy the next book in the series in eBook form unless the narration is properly split.
