"good story, bad narration"
I give a 5 for the story, but had much trouble with the narration. All the fun back-and-forth between the detectives from the first book was missing. OK, it was there -- but the narrator made it seem like it wasn't. Please listen carefully to the sample before purchasing! (your mileage may vary)
"Absolutely fantastic narrator!"
I suspect I'd enjoy this even more were I English, or more
knowledgeable about the English cast system, accents, and
so on. Even without that, this (as others in the series) is a
fantastic listen.
Books available on Audible have a lot of great narrators. But also
some who are just ho-hum, and some that are annoying (depending,
of course, on your personal preferences). IMHO, Katherine Kellgren
ranks among the best of the best.
"six stars"
Combination of literary steepage and science fiction. Wish I was more steeped in literature to get more of the jokes/connections. Reading Wikipedia entries added much to my enjoyment. As a bicycle mechanic, I did get the references to Sturmey Archer and Bowden Cable. Which made me realize I likely missed dozens of others.
"fa"
Please see review from David, from Glenview, IL; he's said it very well. Only thing to add: I hesitated about this listen because, judging from some of the publisher's comments, etc, I feared the religious overtones might be strong, obnoxious, and pro "intelligent design." I was very wrong! This book is full of ideas, debates about ideas, and great fun. If you like great sci-fi (as opposed to fantasy -- when will they stop being lumped together on the shelves!) I believe you'll enjoy this read.
"enjoyable satire"
Perhaps no brilliant new sci and/or fi insights (I'm only 1/2 way through), but brilliant satire. Don't know if the author intended that, but very enjoyable. A very fon listen. The narator sometimes seems to lose track of his accents---but I don't care, his reading is still topnotch. And maybe that was his intention, in keeping with the satiracal (sp) theme.
