  • Angela's Ashes

Why we think it’s a great listen: There’s no gentle way to put this – Frank McCourt’s performance of Angela’s Ashes is just better than the Pulitzer Prize-winning book. Frank McCourt shares his sometimes heartwarming, sometimes heartbreaking story of growing up poor, Irish, and Catholic in the Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir Angela's Ashes.

Karen says: "A classic book *and* a classic audiobook"
    "What a pity"
    Overall

This could have been a beautiful story. Frank endured things which can make one great. I would warn anyone looking for a soul-inspiring story that this book, while generally a wonderful story, is littered with crassness, and disgusting episodes of self indulgence.

Best-selling author Brad Thor has crafted a must-read blockbuster featuring hard-nosed U.S. anti-terrorist agent Scot Harvath. Fiendish al-Qaeda terrorists are planning to rescue their imprisoned WMD expert during the chaos they create with their July 4th destruction of all bridges and tunnels to Manhattan. Now it's up to ex-SEAL Harvath to stop the evil-doers -- and neutralize the diabolical three-foot-tall villain known as "The Troll" who supplies their intelligence.

If you love to hear from a writer that can't describe the action without extreme profanity, this is your book

Pulitzer Prize winner James B. Stewart's Den of Thieves tells the full story of the insider-trading scandal of the late 1980s that nearly brought down Wall Street. Stewart reveals how some of the biggest names on Wall Street (Michael Milken, Ivan Boesky, Martin Siegel, and Dennis Levine) crafted a scheme to grab billions before a band of downtrodden detectives brought them to justice.

A User says: "Riveting story that will leave you incredulous"
    "Great story, bad language"
    Overall

I found the first part of the story to be very engaging. I didn't listen to all of it due to bad language (frequent F- words, etc.). I hold little respect for an author who chooses to write in profanity - even when quoting someone. It is just as easy to paraphrase, maintain dignity, and convey the appropriate sentiment. Two stars for the author's lack in this regard.

  • Heroes of History

At Will Durant's death at 96, in 1981, his personal papers were dispersed among relatives, collectors, and archive houses. Twenty years later, scholar John Little discovered the previously unknown manuscript of Heroes of History in Durant's granddaughter's garage. Written shortly before he died, these 21 essays serve as an abbreviated version of Durant's best-selling, 11-volume series, The Story of Civilization.

John says: "A celebration of history"
    "Good book, wrong title"
    Overall

I'm a fan of Durant's works, but this book is mis-named! It should have been called something like 'History of the World from 30,000 feet'. I figured someone with Durant's vast knowledge would have hand-picked some of the greatest hero stories of history to comprise this volume. Not so.

No growing pains have ever been more hilarious than those suffered loudly by the riotous Gilbreth clan. First, there are a dozen red-haired, freckle-faced kids to contend with. Then there's Dad, a famous efficiency expert who believes a family can be run just like a factory.

Mary A. says: "Loved in print, even more in Audio!"
"Five stars from the whole family"
    Overall

This narrative offers something for parents and children alike. I was surprised that even our 4 year old son asks to listen to Cheaper By the Dozen. Entertaining and inspiring!
