Freeman, the new novel by Leonard Pitts, Jr., takes place in the first few months following the Confederate surrender and the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Upon learning of Lee's surrender, Sam - a runaway slave who once worked for the Union Army - decides to leave his safe haven in Philadelphia and set out on foot to return to the war-torn South. What compels him on this almost-suicidal course is the desire to find his wife, the mother of his only child, whom he and their son left behind 15 years earlier on the Mississippi farm to which they all "belonged".

Would you consider the audio edition of Secrets of Sloane House to be better than the print version?

I enjoyed the audio version because the narrator tavia Gilbert performance made the characters come alive

Who was your favorite character and why?

Roseland because of her determination and courage to find her sister and how she helped and cared for others even at the expense if her reputation.

What about Tavia Gilbert’s performance did you like?

Her expressive voice brought an emotion to all the characters. She made you care about Roseland and Reid. I love her narration style. She really knows how to covey the tension and strength of the characters in the story. She also portrays the make characters of Reid Mr Sloane and Mr. Armstrong and Douglas with variety and in a way that they sound like very different men.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Sloane house is a house of secrets can one woman unlock them or will she be destroyed by them?

    Any additional comments?

I enjoyed this novel and cannot wait for book 2 in the series!
