"A Poor Example of DeMille"
This book, while very violent, didn't have any of the 'fear factor' I noted in the Lion's Game, one of my favorite books ever. John Corey seems bullyish, and a foolish risk taker. Maybe it's better when reading; this narrator tried to imitate John Wayne and is very annoying. Toward the end I began to root for the bad guys just to get it over. Sorry but I really disliked this book.
"Not great."
I agree with "Dan" in his Nov. '09 review. At the end I was relieved it was over. Pointless vulgarity and horror. Usually I love King but this was way too much.
"Very engaging"
I found this book fascinating, and learned some historical information. The charachters were realistic. All in all, a very good listen.
"One of my favorite books EVER!"
I bought this after reading excellent recviews on this site, and I couldn't be more happy! The reader's voice is so gentle and lyrical, and the story is powerful and unique. I never will forget these characters. And the modern history of the area (Ethopia and environs) was enlightening. I did not want it to end. Clearly worth 2 units!
