Anne Hathaway's use of voices and characterisations to keep every one audibly separate and recognizable.
The simple fact that there were many elements which were not in the (classic) movie.

As always the book is better than the movie. However I prefer the movie's editing in that there are several scenes in the book which are too long and unnecessary.
Anne Hathaway's performance(s) make this so much more enjoyable than the film even if you've seen the film an uncountable number of times (like myself).
I would consider them equal. I listened to / read the book using Whispersync for Audio: starting the book by listening and finishing the book on my Kindle. They were both great.
His subtle use of voices and characterisations truly made each character unique and he brought the book to life without it sounding like a radio production.
