"Not the author's best."
Story was interesting enough, but this author has produced much better work. Too many unlikely situations and coincidences. Did not care for the narrator AT ALL. Slow, stilted rhythm which made the reading sound like a grade school production. Tried adjusting the playback speed on my iPod, but speeding it up did not make it any easier to listen to. I finished the book, but never really bonded with any of the characters or their situations and didn't particularly care how the story concluded.
"Slow moving."
Started out really good, but I'm not even finished Part 1 and I'm not sure if I can handle another 9 hours. Story is interesting, characters well developed, but it really drags. I don't have a problem with the narrator - he's fine for me. But at times I feel like I'm listening to a lecture about wildlife preservation. Where was the editor for this book? It's way too long for the storyline. I'm having trouble staying interested. I never listened to abridged books, but this time I'm wishing I had purchased the shorter version just to get things moving.
"You know what to expect and you get it."
Stephanie Plum is always fun. We've made it through 15 books, and she never learns. I'm getting to where I want more time with Lula. She and Grandma make a perfect pair! Janet Evanovich's books aren't literature, but don't pretend to be. The whole group of characters is "I Love Lucy" all over again. Take a break and enjoy!
"Held my attention."
Good story, but weak character as "President". Couldn't help but dislike him and certainly never felt any empathy for his plight. The narrator's voice was wimpy and extremely stilted for this supposedly charismatic leader. I got lost in the plot a couple of times, but eventually got back on track. Subplots never fit together and I think that's what confused me. I was looking for something that wasn't there!
"Good light listening"
No deep thoughts, no mysteries to solve. Thanks goodness. Enjoyed the listen, which was perfect to pass the time while painting my kitchen.
"Just fun!"
Listened to this book over the last couple of days and it was a light, fun story. It really hit home because I listened while I was fixing up my family home for new tenants. Don't expect to tax your brain -- this is just what I needed to keep my mind distracted from the tedious chores at hand.
"Okay, not great."
Characters a bit old-fashioned and stilted. Took a long time to figure out where the story was going. Pace picked up a couple of times, but didn't follow through. Not my favorite, but I did finish it.
"Not sure about the rave reviews."
Maybe I expected too much after reading all the reviews. Story felt like it kept trying to build to a peak, but never quite made it. Characters weren't very likable, except for the bad guys. Main character had a great dry wit, but I never found myself wanting to help him out of a bad situation. Felt like he caused his own troubles. The wife character was looney, but not very believable. Their relationship didn't make sense. Don't think I'll listen to the sequel.
